He may be behind in the Republican primary but I believe he is the most popular Republican candidate among the general population. Which is why I think he should run as an independent if (when) he does not receive the nomination, but unfortunately he 'has no plans' to do so.

The problem for his chances of nomination is that all the people donating all that money to him aren't all Republicans that would vote in the primary, but independents and Democrats too.

I can't understand why people still want to donate money to a candidate like Ron Paul at this stage in the process when it's clear he stands no chance of winning?

Seems like they are throwing money down the drain.

I don't think the reason has much to do with winning. Many people are desperate for change and they want to feel a part of that change. Ron Paul represents that change, and with just a few clicks away, at the price of about 50 dollars, you can easily access such a feeling of partaking in change. Though I think there are those out there that still think Ron Paul can get the Republican nomination. Perhaps they're nostalgic for the days of Goldwater conservatism, but I think they have to realize that their Republican party is long lost.

It's pretty obvious by now, barring some huge shift in Republican support toward his favor, it's pretty unlikely at this point that Ron Paul will get the nomination.

Having said that, raising $6 million+ in a 24-hour period is still pretty good, especially for someone who doesn't fare well in the mainstream polls. Strange, at first I really didn't think much of him, just some oddball, fringe third-tier candidate; but the more I pay attention, the more I like the guy, he might make for a good President.

Here's his voting record and stances on the issues if anyone's interested:
