That is another thing-probably the most impotant thing people must start learning; buying above their means.America must also learn the true difference between needs and wants. Gary's example of the Lexus at 20% interest is a very good example. I can understand that one needs a car for transportation. But to feel that that car must be a Lexus is the true problem; when the individual is looking at a huge note to be repaid-at 20 percent!
Do you really need a Lexus? What can this car do that a Ford Focus, say; cannot? Granted; the Lexus is more classy. That is where one must be able to draw that fine line between Needs and wants.

I have no worries about AIDS.

And apparently you are ignorant about California's colossal exports of food all over the world, $7.5 bn in 2003.

Whereas your midwestern farmers are heavily subsidised by the Fed - which is another example of socialism in America - and yes the Fed is heavily subsidised by the richer coastal states.

How come you know so little about your own country?

Rightly or wrongly the US economy depends heavily on credit and on consumers going right to the edge of their ability to spend - and then a little further.

Why arent you worried about AIDS when California is second in the country in cases? who do you think pays for all that care? we all do. you should also worry about all of the prisoners your state breeds.

You are very correct, Gary. The US economy does rely on credit. But that doesn't mean one should be so foolish as to purchase goods and services at usury rates.
Credit is not something to be taken lightly. It is a neccesity in today's world. Individually, we cannot worry about national politics when we purchase goods and services. We must be diligent in searching for the best terms possible; and in knowing exactly we can realistically afford in payments when using credit. This is why I'm such a strong advocate of putting financial education in school cirriculums. Our country's current financial crisis just underlines my belief in why this must be done. There are way too many things that a little education and common sense could have solved (actually prevented beforehand) for many of our citizen's financial problems.

Agreed to a point with you, but idiots they are not.

Correct, H80. There are also many things that the ordinary citizen could not and cannot control; that doesn't mean that these people are idiots or dopes. Uninformed definitely. Unfortunately, many of those uniformed are trying to climb out of a deep hole by digging it deeper! That does not; will not, and never will work!
