NYPD officers cleared on shooting.

3 NYPD detectives acquitted in 50-shot killing - Yahoo! News

So what kind of a message does this send? Is it okay for officers in NY to shoot for any reason against an unarmed man?

I don't havethe full story on this yet; but from what I heard this morningI must ask why an officer needed (or felt the need) to discharge his weapon 31 times in this instance. Was he that bad a shot? After the first hit; did he not notice that the subject was down? Why was it necessary to keep shooting if there was no fire coming from the victim?
These situations are what damage the image of police everywhere- sometimes irreparably.
Personally, I think the Justice Department will need to re-open and investigate this case. There are far too many inconsistencies in the facts. I can understand an officer shooting to protect himself,or in securing the safety of innocent parties being threatened. I also understand that sometimes intentions can be misread by officers in certain situations.
But I cannot understand how the officers still felt threatened enough to keep firing when they recieved no fire in the first place. Just how many shots do you need to render a potential criminal helpless?
I can almost guarantee that this will not be the last we'll hear of this case.

Like the Rodney King fiasco, I am sure that the justice dept. will enter this case. 31 times is way too many. For now, it seems like these kind of officers have a license to kill or be too aggressive with their service weapons.

Ther's also the scientific evidence to be considered. Put together with the psychogical factors, I can see trouble ahead for these officers. I'm not a lawyer or an evidence techician; but even I know that a standard- issue firearm for a police officer does not include such waeponry that can hold at any one time 31 shots.
This means that the officer shot and re-loaded his weapon; to shoot more. At what point did he figure that he didn't need to keep shooting? Why 31 shots? Why not 331 shots?
Thisis where the police officer's testimony will either exonerate them; or crucify them.

I'm sure Al Sharpton may lead calls for the latter, but I doubt it. He would want their badges.

This story has pissed me off from day one. And now I feel "Rodney King" pissed. I never play the race card but in this case, I find it VERY difficult to believe they would shoot 50 rounds at a white group of young men. I'm speechless. I had a trip planned to NYC in August. I think I'd rather go to BFE Mississippi. I'd feel safer.

This is a tragic miscarriage of justice, and of COURSE it was a race bias issue.
Shameful. Absolutely shameful.

While this incident may raise questions about a possible use of excessive force by the NYPD, this incident surely isn't about RACE...being that the policemen who were involved in this incident were from a mixed bag of races.

And anyone who pulls out "the race card" when discussing this incident is completely ignorant of this fact.

Two of the three officer involved in the shooting are black. Could you imagine the slobber slinging that would be going on if all the officers were white?

Anybody that doesn't think that "Black people" can have prejudice against their own people is completely ignorant about that fact as well. I didn't say white people wouldn't shoot at a bunch of white youths. No person would shoot at a car full of white kids 50 times like they did in this case.
