Can anybody compare that story with Jane Fonda's visit to Vietnam, in which she criticized a US soldier there? I knew the White House would not be happy with Pelosi's visit, but then they've mismanaged the war in Iraq anyway.

I don't see any comparison with Fonda visiting North Vietnam whilst America was at war with that country.

We are not at war with Syria.

I think it's better to swallow some pride and talk with them, as we have even with Iran.

The Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study group recommended renewing a dialogue too.

Of course, Pelosi will take full advantage of an opportunity to upstage Bush and appear to make him more marginalised and less relevant.

I agree it is a good idea to talk to them. If Syria agrees to not back terrorists, then we should treat them as friends. It is kind of nice finally seeing someone from our government trying to bridge a gap towards peace with one of our supposed enemies. A glint of hope... for me anyway.

Syria, is already classified by Mr. Bush as part of the Axis of Evil, and one of the nations he won't talk too. I think the Bush administration's belief is that we are techniquely at war with Syria, as part of the broad definition, of the war on terror.
I also think the neo-conservative Republicans feel underminded on their posssible near future target and it's share of black gold.

I guess you haven't noticed that several notable Republican legislators have also visited Syria already. The MSM certainly made no note of it. All of them have a perfect right to go visit Syria. But they really have no right to speak for our government, and certainly have no business speaking for Israel! Nancy Pelosi is an idiot. Pure and simple. It's not just the Washington crowd claiming she acted foolishly and said things she had no right to say, representing Israel, indeed!

A day after Pelosi’s well-publicized visit with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Republican Darrell Issa (CA) met with Assad saying that Bush had failed to promote the dialogue that is necessary to resolve disagreements between the US and Syria.

“That’s an important message to realize: We have tensions, but we have two functioning embassies,” Issa told reporters after separate meetings with Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem.

And a few days before Pelosi, three other Republican congressmen visited with Syria, Frank Wolf of Virginia, Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania, and Robert Aderholt of Alabama.

“I don’t care what the administration says on this. You gotta do what you think is in the best interest of your country,” said Republican Congressman Wolf.

---------------------------------

Oh, you mean these Republicians? You mean the ones that Bush didn't even mention while hypocritically pointing fingers at Pelosi? Thanks for pointing this out. About time peace was actually proposed by someone, huh? Maybe both parties are starting to see the positive side of peaceful negoiations! This is great news. Next stop.....Iran.

The problem with Pelosi is that as the Speaker of the House she is third in line of succession should something happen to the President. Furthermore, the Constitution clearly states that it is the President who has the power to make Treaties with the advise and consent of the Senate. Now where in that explicit power does it grant the power to the Speaker of the House any responsibility.........nowhere!!!!

Hmmm so here we have the Speaker, travelling to a foreign country, as a representative of the United States, who has no real power to negotitate, and furthermore, trying to pass off as if she was speaking not only for our Country, but for one of our allies as well. Seems that somebody was acting a little too big for her own britches.

So many of you seem to cry when their is a supposed breach of our Constitution by the President, well, here is clearly a direct breach of an explicit power of the Constitution by Pelosi. Where is your outrage?????
Oh that's right Pelosi is not Bush, so then she can do no wrong.

BTW, the Logan Act makes it a felony for any citizen of the United States to negotiate with a foreign government. As you have all so well pointed out, it was not only Pelosi but several other Congressmen as well, so much for the notion that Pelosi was going to run the most ethical Congress. It would seem that Congress is filled with would be felons.

Well what can expect from someone who has lauded the success of their first 100 days by marking the legislation that has passed the house, yet has all failed to become law.

She spoke way out of turn about the Israelis and had no call or right to do so. So she looked like a complete idiot. Even the left leaning Washington Post thought so. Now, that was a shock! The Post agreeing with ME????

Who would have "thunk it"??

Even sometimes the Post gets one right. With this crowded field of Democratic candidates for the Presidency in 2008, Pelosi just doesn't seem to have a niche.
