Level up: 57%, 187 Points needed | | If you are familiar with other cultures ancient beliefs, you will find that it wasn't only the Mayans who have prophecies about 2012. The ancient Greeks did, as well as the Chinese, the ancient Romans, the Egyptians, the Cherokee, and many others. I find that to be somewhat strange. The Mayan civilization has mapped the heavens and made a more accurate calendar then we are capable of even today. The date of 2012 is the time when our planet will have gone through a full cycle that is about 26,000 years. That cycle is called the precession of the equinox, and on the date of Dec. 21st, 2012, we will be in the center of the milkyway galaxy. That happens only once every 26,000 years. That is the reason for much of the theories about 2012. |

And how did they know so durn much about the cosmos to come up with such an accurate system of calendars. I told my wife she's taking leave from December 2012 til the end of January 2013 just in case of error. But the Mayan calender was pretty accurate, I wonder how was our translation?

Did you hide in your basement holding a crucifix on 6/6/06? If not, then why this?
The Mayans had a complex understanding of the stars, because they obsessed over them *literally* as if they were gods. They thought the world was coming to an end every time there was a solar eclipse. Rightfully, people should be stressing out when solar eclipses happen, not in 2012 when it merely is an end of an age, not time itself.
The History Channel loses its factual and historical value because they play whatever gets the highest ratings. This is why they play more shows about how people think Jesus is going to come flying back to Earth to save humanity, or shows about how many people think UFOs are visiting us and probing cows. But not necessarily anything truly relevant to historical fact.

But anyway, the Mayans were an ignorant people. These are people who thought they were getting messages from the gods through the stars. This thing will blow over like 6/6/06 did, and, well, practically every other stupid and superstitious prophecies of the end of the world.
And anyway, the human race is fully capable of surviving a pole shift. It might be pretty devastated, but life has many ways of staying alive. |
I thought all the Mayans did was cut out peoples' hearts, and then chopped off their heads, on the top of a temple. |

Why? To please the sun gods.
But it really depends on what god in the sky they were trying to please. If it was the fire god, for example, they would have a big feast and burn captives alive afterward.
If you really think the world is going to end based on Mayan myth, I think you should start the sacrifices right away to save humanity!
