WASHINGTON: In response to a lawsuit, the US Department of Defence released new footage of the Sep 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the Pentagon.

But the video did not show the plane itself crashing into the side of the Pentagon, as many had expected.

Posted on the website of Judicial Watch, a public interest group, the new footage was filmed from inside the Pentagon's outer walls, showing an explosion as the plane hits.

However, the tip of the nose cone of the plane could be spotted before it hit the Pentagon.

Judicial Watch had requested the video from the Pentagon in 2004 but was rebuffed on the grounds that the video was part of an investigation of Zacarias Moussaoui, an admitted Al Qaeda operative.

After Moussaoui was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month, the Pentagon said it would provide the video.

"We fought hard to obtain this video because we felt that it was very important to complete the public record with respect to the terrorist attacks of Sep 11," said Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton in a statement before the release.

Another video reportedly taken from a nearby hotel and currently held by the Department of Defence has still not been released, CNN reported.

Before the release, Judicial Watch said it hoped that making public the video "will put to rest the conspiracy theories involving American Airlines Flight 77".

The trial of Moussaoui has led to a number of previously unreleased items reaching the public, as a result of being admitted into evidence during the case.

In April, authorities released the transcript of the cockpit voice recording of United Flight 93, which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers revolted against their hijackers.

Unfortunately, it will do NOTHING to quiet the conspiracy theorists. It's a "surveilance camera" tape, so there are nowhere near as many "frames" as in real-time video.

Of course, the cospiracy theorists have yet to answer how the US Government simply disposed of a giant commercial jetliner, and all its passengers...

There are multiple camera angles of the plane hitting the pentagon that they could release (hotel across the street).

FEMA had steel recovered from the building rubble destroyed or shipped overseas before a serious investigation could take place.

There is plenty of video footage and EMS communications showing and indicating the aircraft hitting the 2 towers on that horrific morning in 2001. Try explaining that away.

We had a crime scene of a mass murder and the evidence gets hauled away, never to be seen again. How can any decent person support such an event?
