On Hitler: " I do not consider Hitler to be as bad as he is depicted. He is showing an ability that is amazing and seems to be gaining his victories without much bloodshed." -Mohandas Gandhi, May 1940 Here's what he said about the Jews during the Holocaust. While I admire his absolute dedication to the principle of non-violence, I think that he was very, very wrong about this. "The Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs." -Speaking to biographer Louis Fischer in June 1946 My political compass Economic Left/Right: 5.63 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.41

As for the second quote, again out of context. Allow me to quote the full statement. “Hitler,” Gandhi said, “killed five million Jews. It is the greatest crime of our time. But the Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher’s knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs… It would have aroused the world and the people of Germany… As it is they succumbed anyway in their millions." He was talking about the need of the Jews to show non-violent resistance to their Nazi oppressors. He was an enemy of the Nazis because he was a harsh critic of them, obviously. He saw only more harm coming as a result from violent resistance of the British, and saw the great power of non-violent resistance. It was his philosophy (and a true religious philosophy at that) to, turn the other chek and pray for your enemies. He was applying this philosophy to the European Jews. “He [Herman Kallenbach] has an intellectual belief in non-violence,” Gandhi remarked, “but he says he cannot pray for Hitler... I do not quarrel with him over his anger. He wants to be non-violent, but the sufferings of his fellow Jews are too much for him to bear. What is true of him is true of thousands of Jews who have no thought even of ‘loving the enemy.’ With them, as with millions, ‘revenge is sweet, to forgive is divine.’” "If you want to achieve peace of mind and happiness, then have faith; if you want to be a disciple of truth, then search" -- Friedrich Nietzsche Economic Left/Right: -9.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.72

Where exactly did I miss the context? I said that Gandhi said these things because he was absolutely dedicated to nonviolence, but that he is wrong, and has been wrong on Jewish issues. My political compass Economic Left/Right: 5.63 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.41

| I'm not worried until the state-sponsored book burnings begin. If that happens, I'm going back to Canada. My political compass Economic Left/Right: 5.63 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.41 | |||||||||||||||||||||
