No way
It can't be a prank. There are so many cases of paedophilia these days that it would be cruel and insensitive to joke about such a matter...especially on a national political scale. It looks like a web article written by a conservative extremist who can't seem to phathom the idea that Foley and other Republicans are human and have their own psychological problems. It's like the author thought, "A gay Republican ? NOT POSSIBLE !"

It also begs the question, who would go out of their way to put Foley in rehab, have him send sexual IMs to boys, etc. ? That's almost as crazy as the 9/11 conspiracy theory saying the US government is behind it. For the last time, people: AFGHANISTAN IS NOT IRAQ ! (You wouldn't believe the idiot I go to school with...they think all Arab countries are one and that the war in Iraq was a way to get back at Afghanistan's terrorist groups.)
Everything's better in France. Except the government. Still, vive la France !

Well... it does appear that this "prank theory" is probably false.

However, it is not at all far-fetched to think that something like this could happen. People lie all the time. People do stupid things all the time.

...and it's not just attention.

Sometimes it's a way of getting "an edge", or it can be some sort of revenge.

Years ago I had a former secretary accuse me of sexual harrassment. It was totally wrong and stupid - and was proven so. What was most stupid about it is that she claimed I was "groping and molesting her daily" for 7 years. Her story started to crumble when it was pointed out that she'd worked for me for less than 5 years, and also when somebody told her that "if you were groped daily for that long, you obviously liked it!" From there, her "case" pretty much disintegrated!

She had/has some weird mental problems...

But another bad thing about that was/is that somebody can make certain accusations, and it is assumed that the accused is GUILTY - unless it can be proven otherwise.

This is well documented. They have the IM conversations.

I'm NOT trying to say - in any way - that Foley didn't do what he's being accused of.

Different conversation!

I don't know. Did he use being an alchoholic as an excuse? I think that's the dumbest excuse ever. Maybe it's an excuse for throwing up in public, or being tipsy, or being in a car accident, but last time I checked, booze doesn't make people want underage boys.
