A state of anarchy would be the only situation where the constitution could be suspended. Martial Law indicates military control over civilian populations and would require the cooperation of the military. There is no situation in America short of anarchy that could result in the military following the orders of the president.

We live in a land of instant communication and it is impossible for the president to have this much power short of an actual case of anarchy.

Jesus Christ the president has constitutional authority to dismiss congress if he wants to if "he" decides there is a dispute between House and Senate exists but in modern times of communication this would be impossible. Anarchy is the only reason that would justify Martial Law and guess what, if America was in anarchy the military would be unable to control it.

Edited to add: During in Katrina the government took weapons away from citizens even it they had the weapons lawfully. This was a violation of the US Constitution but justified by the government.

Of course he does and the military consists of how many people? How many people are there in America? How many people in the military would follow an absurd order? How many of those in the military would be blind enough to follow an ignorant order.

Yes, martial law could and probably should be established in anarchy of a city... they did it in Washington DC during the DC riots with MLK, my platoon was there on the front line. But the entire country, you got to be kidding... what order would not be challenged if anarchy weren't present?

For it to work all the military and police agencies would have to blindly follow the lead of one man and that could only happen if the "reason" was survival of the nation from some sort of anarchy.

Well, do you think that the president would admit that there really wasn't a threat to the nation and that he just decided to stay in office indefinitely? I don't. The Democratic party is imploding and going to take Obama with it. Harry Ried is losing his mind in the Senate trying not to allow his members to vote on energy issues and Nancy Peolsi is doing the same in the HOuse but there is going to be a sanity revolt against this hardhead stupidity... these buttholes are going on another vacation at the end of the month and refuse to do anything about energy when over 75% of the American people have called them out... They are protecting the Obama plan of green union workshops building clean green replacements for oil with no additional domestic energy exploitation. The Sierra Club and the very far left are tickled pink but the other 75% of America is pissed and getting more pissed every day. You think Bush uses fear, what do you call the crap the congress liberals are using? Why are they so scared to vote against drilling, nuke power, oil shale, ANWR building refineries? Do they think that if they voted wrong (that means against Sierra Club and the far left) that the majority of Americans might fire them? If they are secure in their position why not just vote and win each vote as they feel it should go? They are cowards and airline workers, Las Vegas and other tourist destinations workers are going to ask why the fuck don't you just vote on energy and get the price down? Why because it need to remain high for Obama's energy plan to go into place in the coming year...

Obama isn't going to have the chance because he's weak and the energy thing and Iran are going to make him fall on something sharp. If it looks like Obama in 09 then Israel will hit Iran and Obama will fall on his sword... deader than hell!
