It is like having a drink... a lot of parents will have a drink or a smoke with their kids once the kid has graduated and is an adult.
My two oldest sons are almost 19 and 17, and have recruiters calling almost daily about them joining the army.

I don't think it's right that they are old enough to get their heads blown off for their country but they can't have a beer in their own house?!?!?!?! WTF?

And, to be perfectly honest, I was drinking socially at 16, and smoking weed at the same time (socially, only, never went to school high or drunk).

I would have joined the military, probably the Army, if I didn't have a hearing impairment, Knot. I even was recuited by an commercial airline aeronautical school to be a pilot.

A 16 year old girl might be able to handle that okay. Many 16 year old boys would not. Girls are far, far more mature than boys at that age.
(And I think that holds true up until about age 40 or so...LOL)

But I agree with you that it's retarded for a kid to be old enough to step on a landmine.. but supposedly too young to drink a beer -- esp. with parental supervision.

Nothing "wrong" with that at all, but I find ZERO alcohol consumption a bit odd.

I don't drink but this is because after drinking for years I realized I liked to to much and it could become an issue..so before it became an actual issue I stopped drinking. Some people don't drink for very good reasons other then they simply don't enjoy the feeling.

I also stopped doing any sort of drugs. I've never been a pot smoker to me its a half assed drug if I was going to go down it was going to be dropping something worthwhile...As I was a teenager and young adult of the 80's I did almost everything perhaps and I was over the top..so as to avoid being the sad old fart in the corner still doing 'e' in my 30's I stopped those too. My mis-spent youth looked alot like the movie Less Then Zero...

I do think drugs should be legal and people should have the right to choose this for themselves. I am sick of them wasting money on the war against it when it would be better to legalize it and regulate it much as they do the tobacco industry. I also think prostitution should be leagl but thats another issue not covered by this topic. I think that anyone who is old enough defend their country is old enough to drink. There's quite a few non-drinkers on this board, it seems. (I are one.) What, are we the damn Temperance Union or something? LOL.

Or an AA chapter?
Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

Pot is much less ruinous to a life than alcohol given that either is used in a responsible and moderate manner. Yet pot is illegal and alcohol is almost encouraged. Go figure. Yeah--we've got it right in this country. I work in a pediatric cancer clinic and the docs mildly discourage pot but they would rail against alcohol. And for very good reason too.

Interesting thoughts. As an ex-smoker and I very much disagree with the lowering of the drinking age to 18 (again) and with the current policy of selling cigarettes to 18 year olds.

Smoking studies have shown that young adults are the most vulnerable to starting a smoking habit. In my college days I would have very much disagreed with upping the drinking age, but as someone who struggled with smoking for 24 years I am incensed that we will sell cigarettes to adolescents at the age of 18 when drinking can't legally occur until the age of 21. Cigarette habits are well documented to develope between the mid teens to early 20's. WTF are we thinking of as a society for selling cancer sticks to young adults in this very vulnerable age-range??? Raise the cigarette age to 21! We'll stomp out a lot of smoking if we do!
