I make perfect sense. I presented my point and you countered. WE disagree. I'm not really one to discuss drugs or prostitution since I'm not really interested in either. I think they should remain for the most part illegal. There's really not much to debate.

At least you didn't call him a liar because he disagrees with you - that's an improvement!

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. I don't mean to hijack this thread but unless you can prove to us that one can know God or that God exists, people that say they know are liars. Either that or stupid enough to not know the difference between knowing and believing.

That simply isn't true (which doesn't mean you're lying) and I'm surprised that a bright guy like you would make such a statement!

lie • noun an intentionally false statement
AskOxford: lie2

not just incorrect but "Intentionally false"

If you believe something to be true then you are not telling a lie when you say so, even if your statement is not or cannot be proven.

You believe that one day you will be a Professor. You cannot prove it, but you aren't lying.

However, if I said that one day I'll be a Professor I would be lying, because I know that statement is intentionally false.

If you claim to know that there is a God you are clearly a liar. Unless of course you are the first person in human history to objectively prove that God exists.

Defending the truth doesn't get any easier.

People that claim to know that there is a God are LIARS. People like Gary have a hard time accepting that reality... and I guess that isn't too surprising, though it is disappointing.

That only shows you have no faith. Those with strong enough faith feel as though they do "know God".

Meanwhile people like hev still can't grasp the meaning of words like "liar" and "truth"!

Still, he believes he's telling the truth, though by his own logic that makes him a liar!

Hence the qualifier "Either that or stupid enough to not know the difference between knowing and believing."

You are right that in this example I wouldn't be lying if I said "I believe I will one day become a professor."

But I would be lying if I said "I know I will one day become a professor."

I, and perhaps Hev also, both understand perfectly the meaning of words like "liar" and "truth", I think it is you who does not grasp the meaning of words like "know" and "believe".

If one said "I believe God exists."

That is not a lie.

If one said, "I know I believe God exists."

That is presumably not a lie.

If one said, "I know God exists."

That is a lie. Either that, or like you, does not know the difference between knowing and believing.

You gotta have faith in yourself before you have faith in anyone else.

Eh, it's all semantics. Those who claim to know God, only know that they know something. They then translate that feeling, or experience into being God knowing. Who really knows what is behind the experience, that has always been the question. I'm satisfied with having that feeling, but not having to label it. I can commune with something higher then myself, i.e. a mystical experience, and then without labeling it and categorising it, I try to let the experience take me where it is meant to. One can never know God, the most we can hope for it to know our self, which is the closet we can come to understanding what some call God. They keys are inside of us, not somewhere outside ourselves.
