So I had a debate tournament and was entered in congress this weekend. The reason I'm mentioning this is because we had a piece of legislation to debate about the legalization of certain drugs, one of them being marijuana. There were many interesting points made, but I had one question I never had the chance to ask. Why is marijuana for recreational purposes a good thing?

Among several reasons why I think the use of marijuana for recreational purposes is a good thing, there is one particular reason that stands out in my mind among all other reasons. This reason, simply put, is that responsible marijuana users, in general, espouse the notion of "freedom of thought."

I mean, what's the use of having such liberties such as free speech, free association, free religion, free press, and the right to assemble if the thought that underlies all of these liberties is constrained by the government...especially if the users of marijuana are socially responsible in its use? In short, our minds, including what we might responsibly alter them with, just as much-or more so-than our homes, aught to be free of unwarranted government intrusions and prohibitions.

For exactly the same reason alcohol is legal.
It is about a person's right to choose what they want to do with themselves.

If you can choose, to use a man made intoxicant, that has been proven to do major damage to your organs, causes some people to get violent, and is responisble for thousands of deaths each year, than the choice to use a naturally occuring plant, that is linked to very few deaths, does littile damage to your body, and doesn't cause people to get violent, should be a given.
There really are no worthy arguements to this logic.
It should be legal to do what ever you want to your body. It's legal to choose to pierce or tattoo any body part you wish but you can't smoke a joint because you find it relaxing?
It's about the individual's right to choice if marijuana is a good thing for thier own recreational pleasure.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong. ~Richard Armour

There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle. ~Alexis de Tocqueville

Vicodin will calm you down. A fifth of vodka will calm you down. Some writers/artists used opiates to open their minds. Does that mean that anything that achieves the desired effect is ok?

I'm sure it has happened winston.

Also, heavy pot smokers suffer with memory problems and cognitive disfunctions later in life.

There is not one medical case history of anyone ODing on pot. Also studies have been done where the results were increased long term memory. But as with anything taken to the extreme health issues can present health case in point overeating. Even fresh clean water can have negatives if to much is consumed.

And the not-so-responsible ones?
