Even if you don't smoke you should check out this movie.
I will definitely look into that.

Legalize everything but have strict laws if people taking drugs affects anyone else. If someone is caught driving under the influence or commits a crime on drugs the punishment should be harsh! And they should be responsible for any health problems they get from drugs because I don't want to pay to take care of them with the taxes i pay!

Legalizing all drugs is probably the best idea. Not only does it generate more revenue for the country, but it would probably eliminate a majority of crimes commited. I have grown up with people who got into heroin and cocaine and crack. And yeah, people dont get high and then break into houses or stores. They commit such crimes to gain money to get the drug. Its not a drug induced crime spree and anyone who thinks it is, is quite ignorant of the facts. Sure our government has something negative to say about every drug, but at the same time I could say something negative about everything that's legal at this point. Cigarettes kill many more people than heroin does, alcohol is responsible for so many drunk driving accidents. Should they be legal? And why are they?

Yeah, you're probably right.

People who are hopped up on drugs normally become docile and never go on crime sprees.

If heroin were as freely available and as acceptable as tobacco, no doubt it would kill as many people. And more quickly too.

People need to be protected from themselves even in a "free" society

I'm not a pot user, but I DO think that it should be legal. There is good reason (public safety) not to legalize certain drugs, but marijuana doesn't fall onto that category.

Of course if it IS ever legalizrd, the government will tax the bejeebers out of it...

...and there you have it: The crux of the debate.

Where's the line between denying people their freedom, and protecting them (and others) from themselves?

...and if the government taxes the bejeebers out of it, the sale of it will just go "underground" - which is precisely where it is today.

The whole "look at all the taxes we could get off it" argument doesn't really hold water, in my opinion.

people don't need to be protected from themselves.

people have the right to be dumbasses and take their lives in their hands.

I'm against seat belt laws, helmet laws, cigarette laws, dietary regulations and restrictions, etc.

I will continue to use seat belts, wear helmets, not smoke and not eat meat. But I think people should have the right to f*ck up their life if they want to do so.

And they should CERTAINLY be allowed to smoke a joint if they want.
