Split between green and socialist party for me too. Socialist just seems to equal communist in so many republicans minds that it wouldn't be worth it for me. Too frustrating to have to explain everything.

Well I don't think its just Republicans, but rather its an American issue. Its a deep American tradition of insecurity and fear. Unusual to most countries, esspecially being the world's only superpower, America retains much of its insecurity despite being in one of the most secure nations in the world. You see it throughout all of American history, moving from scapegoat to scapegoat. First it was the "savage Indians." Which that particular connotation was used in even official US documents. Not to mention Andrew Jackson's official justifications for the conquest of Florida during the first Seminole War; which of coarse was because Jackson needed to 'protect American security' because the Floridian area was a quote "failed state." However we all know now that historically the conquest of Florida had absolutely nothing to do with security, because the only threats were "savage", or "lawless" Indians and runaway slaves. But rather it was a matter of expansion into capturing Spainish settlements.
This example runs parallel to the "War on Terror" and the "failed terrorist state of Iraq." Because not only did Jackson actually use the phrase "failed state" for Florida, but also went to war on 'justification' of Indian terror. Even though Indian attacks on white American settlements were in retaliation to attacks on Indian villages and the massacres that happened there. Plus the quote "lawless Indians" were actually Indians that were being driven out of their homes and murdered by white American settlers. Mostly because the Americans thought their way of life was better and their white skin reserved them their right to treat colored people like animals.
This insecurity followed right up into virtually all American history and retains much of its type in present day America. Soon enough white Americans were afraid of their own slaves. The scapegoat role mostly shifted to Chinese and Chinese immigrants. Then among others, it was the Germans in WWI, then the Japanese along with the Germans, then the Communists, and then finally Muslims. Of coarse I'm skiping over much, including Jews, which many people refuse the fact that there still retains much anti-semitism in America's elite culture. For example I was just in Kansas City about a month ago, and the richest part of the city called "Mission Hills" has a corresponding gulf coarse and country club that to this day still forbids Jews on their property and in their facilities. Tiger Woods has a hard enough time as it is, believe it or not.
By the time Communism got the role of 'evil enemy' in the United States, the extream anti-Communism grew in America and labeled anyone left of almost Laissez-faire capitalism were black listed as Communists and traitors. The fear mongering took form as Mccarthyism, and soon enough Socialism was grouped into Communism. Now today's society retains much of that fuzzy-line between Socialism and Communism. Even today you commonly see people refer Soviet-Communism to "Communism/Socialism" and just group both together. That is the equivelant of Communists saying "Capitalists/Socialists got it all wrong!"
What a lot of Americans don't know is that us Democratic Socialists dislike Soviet-Communism just as much or even more than Laissez-faire capitalism.
Now today, the complete fear of the Muslim and Arab community replaced Mccarthyism. Now many Middle-East born residents in America, and sometimes even Americans, or even Americans with Middle-East born familiy are being commonly and randomly arrested, and jailed to undefined lengths of time without right to due process or habeas corpus, and in some instances deported. Its surprising that many Americans aren't aware of these mass arrests of Muslim men and women across the country. Some Muslim-rich communities are facing a population loss of almost 50% due to arrests, but mostly due to families moving back to their home countries in fear of American officiers or federal officers storming their home and detaining them even without probable cause. Law-abiding citizens can be detained to indefinet lengths and habeas corpus suspended merely if the government stamps "enemy combatant" on their profile. Needing barely any probable cause besides just being born in the wrong place.
I kind of went off and described almost out of the realm of your post. And this will probably spark a debate, so if an admin or someone thinks my post should be in its own thread then move it if you like.
