I do not think receiving money from the government is a bad thing after working your whole life. The problem is that a lot of people do not work their whole life. There are a lot of people who live off the government their whole life, acting as little more than baby-making machines, sucking up more and more welfare. I think these people should not be allowed to do that, and they definately should not be allowed to collect more money at the end of a life time spent doing that.

I think that Social Security can not be a garunteed safety net, if it is, it will only encourage some people to lean on it.
Well said tadpole. I have a couple of Russian friends who laugh at the Americans they see here. He said it is stupid to see people complaining about low pay when they came from another country, got an education, and worked it up big. It's just so easy.

Some people don't even have a chance at an education in this country unless they join the military! The price for an education is insane.

Education or not people should be taken care of... their basic needs that is. Just look at our neighbors to the north. If they can do it, we certainly can too.

Want to save social security?

I have the answer:

Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman joined 500 respected economists last week in endorsing a Harvard University study that said federal and state governments could realize a $14 billion gain by regulating and taxing marijuana as a legal product.

I'm going to post the whole article under the appropriate category.

All it is my friend did when he came from Russia was look around for a job. He got one, went to college, and went along his way. Not too tough.

His family could have been supporting him for all you know... a job will not pay for rent, tuition, food, books, etc without some support from family or huge loans that he will be paying back until he is 50.

Why don't you ask them how happy they are with their system. There is a reason many of them come here to see physicians.

Furthermore everyone in this country has an opportunity. It may not be an equal one, but that's the nature of life. Some people will always have to work harder to get ahead, but the opportunity is there.

Tadpole is 100% correct. You just have to work hard for your goals. Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger. Came here on a boat with I believe nothing to his name. He saw how easy it was to succeed so he worked hard and he did it.

My friend went through college with a part time job by taking out some loans. He now has a very high paying job, actually a couple, and he is easily paying off those loans. Many Americans are lazy, whine, max out credit cards, and then complain.

I would not say it is easy, but the point is that hard work and perseverence pays off. Hev, being the owner of multiple businesses I would think you would be the first to understand this principle.

That's true...I meant to use the term "easy", as to what the foreigners think of making it in America would be compared to the country they came from.

Oh by comparison, yes it is easy compared to 90% of the countries in the world. The problem is that the grass is always greener, and many people in this country are quick to try to say that another country has a better system, without doing any real research.

(For the record, I am not hinting anything about Hevusa, he tends to be a fairly well thought out indivisual most of the time...)
