| They could just freeze the gas prices, you know. Our Task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures, the whole of nature, and its beauty. | Why would they do that? The fact is we still pay very little for gas compared to many countries. The only way people will learn to conserve is if the gas prices stay high. And the fact is conservation is what we need. Overall, high gas prices will be better for the environment. | The Democratic Party follows the demands of this organization Smart Energy Solutions Sierra Club and that means they lose in the eyes of common sense of the majority of the American people. Obama has said that he wished the price hadn't risen so quickly and not that the price is high. This week and weeks following the American people will be informed about where the Democratic Party stands on gas prices... that is to say they stand "with" high gas prices because it is good for conservation and the environment. High gas prices encourages alternative energy and in the mind of the Sierra club and Democrats that trumps loss of jobs, cold homes or any other impact high gas prices cause. The American people will choose common sense and that leaves "out" the Democratic Party and Sierra Club's position on America and the approach towards the energy problem. The Republican Party will rub the Democratic Party's nose in their shit like training a kitten on TV requiring them to put up or shut up when it comes to common sense towards energy. The Demwits and Sierra lose on an argument of drilling and doing alternative energy at the same time. There is no defence for Sierra or the Democrats position and if they stick to it they will lose the support of the American people. Here's the losing position when gas prices and food prices rise: LIBERALISM - Emotional thinking fueled by ignorance Last edited by Zack; 07-06-2008 at 07:04 AM. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Quote: I think the reason in history that gas replaced the electric car was the invention of a mechanical starter for a gas engine. When I was growing up on the farm many tractors had crank starters and every time I'd go to the stock sales market with my dad there would be a farmer with a broken arm in the bleachers as a result of a crank kick back. The oil companies may have had some influence but I'd guess people just found it easier and perhaps faster or stronger vehicles to use gas verses electric. I don't think the government should be the one to select a winner when it comes to types of energy but rather the free market. Ethanol is an example of government choosing a winner and it hasn't worked out so well. While ethanol/bio-diesel based on non food sources of carbon could be part of the solution they will not replace the energy supplied by oil. There used to be electric trolleys in most towns and cities in America that were quite efficient and they worked much like the electric cars of today using a generator resistance as a brake... as one trolley applied the brake it produced electricity that was fed back into the grid to power other trolleys. Efficiency of energy is often traded for speed... If you want to put this into context you could use a simple idea using this rule... Let's say you want to lift one ton five thousand feet over an obstacle in the most efficient and clean manner. You could do the lifting with an electric motor and then use the same electric motor to generate electricity on the down side... the only loss would be the mechanical loss and the ton of material would be moved for pennies. Take the same concept for crossing a mountain pass... with gas/diesel engine the lift is accomplished on the up grade and brakes and engine back pressure are used on the down slope. The waste is the brake horsepower and the trade is speed of moving the material across the obstacle. The point is it is the free market that will determine how the work is accomplished... if that were not true we would be moving cargo on the sea with sail ships since the wind is free and it is a proven means of moving cargo. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
