I'll make it simple to understand (and I didn't take it as an insult). I find it immoral, in a "free" society, to censor words or the naked body in media or artwork that someone has produced... be it a book, television show, movie or commercial. We claim to be all about freedom in America yet we have to go overseas to even hear a few choice words on public television?? Backwards freedom if you ask me. Seems pretty Orwellian: WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH --- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope --- "There is no such thing as laziness. Laziness is only lack of incentive." Norman Reider, MD Morality is not contingent on religion to exist. Therefore religion only detracts from the purity of morality. | I do agree with you on the "Orwellian" quotes- nice point. I guess my whole question is what MyTMouse asked earlier. Don't you think there should be some standards of good taste involved? Especially in open public. Yes, I know I'm expounding censorship here, but do you agree that sex is a natural part of life? Should we allow pornography on network television? How about showing porno movies in school for the children? As far as swearing goes; I stand fast on my belief that we all need to excercise good taste in open public. I agree with you on the fact that most, if not all; children understand the meaning of swear words. However, it is not up to any of us individually to assume that any other parents would want to have our children exposed to say, a group of guys swearing like beer truck drivers. Again, while those guys have the right to speak as they will, cannot they excercise some cleaner language in open public? Two things control this- our right to leave if we don't want to hear this language, and if we are in a public place like a McDonald's, the rights of management to ask the swearing guys to leave if they continue this behavior. I was watching TV the other day and one scene had smoking in it. The censures had blurred out the cigarette I wonder if the same standard would apply to an anti smoking campaign?

Good grief! If they are going to start censoring cigarette smoking then all those wholesome 50s sitcoms wlii have to be banned. What network was that on? Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

| I think that is going a little far with censoring; but again, who am I (or anyone else for that matter) to decide what is correct and proper for you and your children to watch on television? | |||||||||||||||||||||

| I don't think it's only about children. Plenty of adults might want to relax and watch a little T.V. without wondering if there's a F-bomb or a boobie scene just around the corner. Like I said, there should be certian channels/times when you "travel at your own risk," so to speak -- and it's understood all bets are off. Likewise there should be places/times, when one can expect shows to be free of profanity/nudity/and so on. If at first you don’t succeed – try, try again and then quit. There’s no sense in making a damned fool of yourself. – W.C. Fields | |||||||||||||||||||||

| I agree with you, Mouse. But isn't what you suggest censorship by definition? We have a circular argument on this thread. No censorship means no restrictions whatsoever on content and language at any time. I agree with this, but I still stink we all need to exercise some restraint in this.We must use good judgement in our behavior; as our children will learn from us. You are right about it not always being about the children. Adults also do not have to be forced to listen to conversation of others loaded with profanity.
