Religious Right tosses magazines
The American Family Association wants to tell you what magazines you can read....how American is that?

Talk To Action | Reclaiming Citizenship, History, and Faith

"The American Family Association wants to protect adult women from the sexually graphic, "hedonistic" content of magazines like Redbook, whether they wish to be protected or not.....The AFA Action Alert goes on to ask readers to cancel their subscriptions to Redbook and all other Hearst magazines, and provides an 800 number and list of titles. These include Popular Mechanics, SmartMoney, and the decorating magazines House Beautiful, Veranda, and Country Living. Readers can then fire off the usual (for the AFA) e-mail of displeasure from their website...."

Most alarming are the comments following the article:

"We wonder why things are going on in this world today with high prices, job cuts, disasters all over and our children raising themselves with no morals, or no decency for themselves, look at the older people. look at the articles they write in magazines now...Freedom of speech can wreck havoc, and we shall each be judged one day!..."--Tammy Branham, 8/9/07

"Next time you see one (or several) of these in a waiting room, pick them up, take them with you to the room and dispose of them! I do it all the time knowing I have protected someone from some vulgarity and do not feel bad at all. It is an act of kindness to the unsuspecting child or parent coming in after you."--Robin, 8/7/07

"I work as a volunteer at a hospital. We greatfully accept magazines for our waiting rooms. I will be on the lookout for these type magazines and remove them promptly to the trash. Thanks for the information."--Joby, 8/9/07

"...What's a parent to do short of living in a community like the Amish or Hutterites do? I tell you truly that if I could find a group of like-minded Christian people, I'd live in my OWN TOWN, with my OWN media sources, my OWN Christian values, and my OWN wonderful Christian neighbors..."--Kelly, 8/7/07

"...God gave us the Bible and that is the only book that we should follow when it comes to our marriages. It is up to us as Christians to put a stop to this ungodly magazine because this kind of trash is nothing but wrong and will send this nation to hell!"--Donna, 8/9/07"
The greatest danger to liberty lurks in the insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.

--Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis

Be a thief for Jesus! How very Christian!
Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

Well, to be fair, I think some gay-rights activists would say the same thing if they learned material from the AFA or Focus on the Family was being left in waiting rooms. After all, somebody might pick it up and be inspired to just go randomly beat the shit out of the next gay person they saw.

Personally, I think there's elements on both the left and right who think "freedom of speech" actually means "freedom of speech, except for something that could hurt my feelings or offend me."

Just different sides of the same coin, IMO.

you're right

and they'd be wrong

... on the other hand, my doctors' waiting rooms SUPPLY magazines. I've never seen people using the waiting room as a propoganda venue.

What has this got to do with gay rights activists?

The articles quoted (so far as I saw) were about heterosexual sex. AFA seems to disapprove of any kind of enjoyable sex.

I bet you will not find a website that is promoting stealing anti-gay literature from waiting rooms. You may think what you want but I have seen no evidence to back up your premise.

Actually could say that equates to what the courts did below in the "Christians suffer workplace discrimination from homosexual activists" thread.

Puh-leese!

First of all, in that case no one stole anyone's property or advocated stealing anyone's property.

Second of all, there was no discrimination, just a lot of whining by Christian activists.

I actually have a subscription to the Focus on the Family monthly magazine.

I give it a quick flip through when it comes to the house. I think it's good to knwo what the other side is up to, you know? Many times, it makes me laugh out loud.

Most of the time, it's about watching out for this or that peril that could cause a happy couple to get divorced. Recently, the focus was on the evils of pornography. But they make sure to have something about the evil gay people in there every month, lest their subscribers forget to hate us for a month.

It's amazing how fragile they think marriage is, and how they encourage married people to trust each other as little as possible.

For example, if your spouse isn't willing to show you his date book, cell phone records, emails, etc., the moment you ask, you should consider it evidence that he is cheating on you. Who even asks to see that stuff? People who don't trust each other, that's who.

I tell you, from my time with their literature, it's clear that they think the institution of marriage is in even more trouble than the public does.

Oh, and then when I am done marveling at it, I do toss the magazine out.
Or, in the winter, use it to start my fireplace.

Sex isn't for enjoyment, CF.

It's for making as many babies as you can, so you can do your duty to fill the world with fundamentalist Christians. Amen!

That's right. Masturbation is for enjoyment. Sex is for procreation only.
