LOL! That term would certainly be misconstrued in the UK. "Fanny" doesn't mean butt over here, it refers to the female genitalia

I learn something new here every day!
Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

Which, if they don't like our government, I guess that means we have a lot more in common with foreigners than many might suspect!
Agreed with you. I've heard it often that anybody in a foreign country comes up to an American tourist and say, "Hi. I know you're from the USA. We hate their government, but we do appreciate you visiting us. Enjoy your stay."

Now would any American tourist visiting a country like Iran be whisked off a plane in Tehran, and be immediately accused of spying, even though the toursit came there just to view the artifacts carved from centuries of history when Iran used to be Persia?

I was in Switzerland in 1989, and no one there ever talked politics with me, which was fine. I didn't go for that. I went there to look at how beautiful the country was. The German people were so nice, but the Italians were another matter. The French I didn't interact with very much. The people in the Grisons area were also good.

I've never looked that closely, Pensi. I'm not a gynaecologist, you know!

Very true. However, I have to say since the dollar crashed, we just don't see as many American tourists as usual. That's down to simple economics, not politics.

I learned that from Graham Norton

While outside of the US, I do not volunteer the fact that I am an American citizen. At times I have witnessed poor treatment of Americans while overseas, and I do not want to deal with this extra drama. From what I can tell, the actions of the American government since 2001 have a lot to do with these feelings of hostility towards American citizens.

Actually, from what I've read in many current books and articles about Iran, the general Iranian public is quite friendly to visiting Americans and they will actively communicate with such visitors if they meet them on the streets in Iran...even to the extent that they will invite such strangers into their homes.

I'm pretty sure the same could not be said of many officials in the Iranian government itself.
