In the past 18 months I've been in Spain, Greece and France.

I've never not admitted being American - I'm proud of being American. Nobody has ever been mean or rude to me in those countries because I'm American.

I would admit to being an American. It would be hard for me to pretend to be anything else.

Believe me whenever any American visit another country
it is noticed by non-Americans who we are, and where
we are from because Americans are very noticeable.

As far as being ashamed of being seen as an American
is a bunch of bs, and again there's nothing wrong with
being known as an American. Our western world style
speaks for itself.

It should be our attitute that should count whenever
or where ever we go, due to the fact that in foreign
countries they are not expecting us to yell....Hey I am
an American, and on the real side in a foreign country
we do not know who dislike us or who welcome us from
their hearts.

This is a free opened world, and nobody should have to
fake or pretend anything. Its just sad that our American
government has made it bad for the innocent.

I agree with tristan, PN, and PP.

Almost usually people have a beef with our government but they speak good about the American people. Which I believe seems that we still have hope; that our relations with the world isn't totally butchered.

Which, if they don't like our government, I guess that means we have a lot more in common with foreigners than many might suspect!

I'm going to India in the fall - I have no intention of "hiding" that I'm American. I'll let you know how it goes.

SInce you've already been to Europe, you probably already know this. Try not to stick out too much in how you dress. This would include printed t-shirts and looking too "touristy." For God's sake DO NOT carry a fanny pack. This is more for personal safety than trying hide your nationality.

It's those purses that you strap around your waist.

Pickpockets just love them.
