I think it's a good point that racism and sexism has a lot to do with it (if not, then 'culturism"?). Because if I'm not mistaken, lawmakers are being disgusted when they see rap city culture exposing their underwear but when pretty Maryjane is posing half-naked for her photoshoot to be posted on a huge 20 foot-high billboard, or when Martha can expose her cleavage or her bikini line in her skimpy outfit, they see nothing wrong with that.

In the end I'd be surprised if this actually becomes law. This is something I'd expect from the Taliban or Iran. Not the United States.
Now, I agree with Katcz. I think this proposal does unfairly target the youth and probably because it is thought that the wearing of the baggy pants (especially with young Blacks) is indicative of a gangbanger. To be effective, and not to target any one such group would be extremely difficult. The next time you need a plumber at your home to fix something; can they not be in violance of this rule? Why not? We joke about a plumber's crack incessantly. So then, what would be the guidelines, then? The showing of too much underwear? Do we not have advertisements on billboards, in print media, and on television that show men (and women) in their underwear without outer clothing at all? How about Victoria's Secret?

Victoria's Secret is OK because the models are all attractive women. With young black men it is not OK.

I know that was a joke, but the actual point is: we seem to be in another set of double standards. This is what is eating the core of America away; in many different forms. What is allowed for one is not allowed for the other.

That was kind of the point of the thread to begin with. Baggy pants should be outlawed on only certain people.

But why should it be that we should even think about ruling on what Blacks can wear? Not all Blacks are gangbangers or drug dealers. what I don't get is how this is even taken seriously. Who even introduced this proposal?

It's mostly young black men who embrace this style of clothing. As such, it is easily associated with gangbangers, drug dealing, and drive-by shootings. It is unfortunate that many blacks are viewed in this way; however, the high crime rate among inner-city blacks does seem to support this notion in many people's minds. The bottom line is that a law banning baggy shorts will target far more black people than any other ethnic group.

Is it just the baggy shorts, or baggy full length pants being considered? Do you see? The inability of America to look at a problem in its whole is what our real problem is. Yes, Blacks wear the baggy shorts or full length pants. But like guns, we have opened up to another problem of the sort that is saying that because Blacks wear baggy clothes; the wearer is probably a criminal; and rather than follow the laws which say that one cannot be guilty of a crime that hasn't yet been comitted; we need to enact a law that will allow us to accuse, arrest, indict, and try somebody simply for the clothes that one wears. This is the sort of garbage that gives clowns like Al Sharpton a stage upon which to espose their rantings. In such a case as this; as much as I don't like him, he would be correct.

When I see someone with their pants drooping half way to their knees, I think that it looks like they just filled their pants with you know what.
