I think that the problem lies with the mixed messages. a university allowing Ahmadinejad to speak is bad yet nobody complains when the president of the United States hugs and kisses saudi terror sponsors (the royals) in public. and remains loyal business partners with them.
As the song says, it was a love T.K.O.

I'm all for freedom of speech as being a fundamental right for all US citizens.

But, if that right is extended to foreigners visiting the US, then why shouldn't that same right be extended to Americans visiting Iran?

So, if you are talking about the "freedom of speech," why limit such a liberty to just Americans and foreigners who are inside the US?

Um, because we do not have power in other countries, but we have power in our own. let's take it to the next logical step. iranians and others are often killed in their countries. so let's kill them when they come here too.

No. Certainly it is a country I would like to visit, though.

You don't think I don't follow the news? You don't think that a lot of us saw the protests in 1979 when the Iranians took over the US Embassy, and they also protested against the USA afterwards, even after the 444 days?

But, Ahmadinejad isn't a US citizen.

Thus, he isn't offered the US Constitutionally protected freedom of speech...even when he is in the US.

So, why should he be treated any differently regarding freedom of speech than Americans are treated when they visit Iran?

Ahmadinejad "speech" seems quite "canned," if you ask me.

I seriously doubt that there will be any real debate today at Columbia University.

Yes I can agree many there do hate Americans. My husband was in the air force and on a base lock downed as Iranians trashed the base. The US soldiers were not allowed to stop them as they rioted on our soil in our air base shouting death to all Americans.

One cannot really say though they have anything close to free speech. Repeating rhetoric of hatred concerning foriegn policies of a government is not exactly free speech.
