It's not a matter of fear, it is a matter of discomfort.

Honestly though, I don't think WE would have cared either way in those surroundings. It wasn't something that really came up. It was just assumed everybody was hetero.
What if one or more of the guys was openly homosexual - what would the reaction have been?

It's not fear....It's just an invasion of my personal space. I've showered with guys before. And even for shock value my roomate in Okinawa and I "acted" gay for a whole day when we got a new roomate once. Took a long "noisy" shower and everything.

That's a long VERY funny story...

But I don't want to shower with a gay man. And if women have the right NOT to shower with me, I should have the right NOT to have to shower with a gay guy.

Now if they start co-ed showers in the military, I predict a surge in enlistment.

I can only talk from my perspective, but I can honestly say that I wouldn't mind. But again, we lived in dorms.

But then again, I can also say that there would have been a few people who would probably have not even enlisted if they knew they might HAVE to work in close contact with a gay person. Especially back in the early 1990's with the AIDS thing happening and all. There would have been a few upset people.

Education is a wonderful thing. By the 90s everyone over puberty and literate should have known they were not going to contract HIV from working with a gay person.
Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

You are talking about 18 year olds in military...... Puberty and literacy may or may not apply. LOL.

Point taken.

I was just thinking of the trouble we had keeping enough literature on the subject on library shelves in the 80s & early 90s when I was working in a public library.

Teachers at our local high school finally declared a moratorium on research papers on the subject. Not because of any bigotry or squeamishness, but because they got tired of grading fifty or so papers on HIV/AIDS per semester. LOL

Yeah I remember that. I was in the Marines from 1987-1990. It was still a big deal. Especially in the Far East with everyone out tryin' to get laid with anything that moved.

Conservatism: Self-centered mean-spiritedness fueled by ignorance and misguided self-importance.

Bigotry is a social disease.

Legalized same-sex marriage almost certainly benefits those same-sex couples who choose to marry, as well as the children being raised in those homes. - David Blankenhorn is president of the New York-based Institute for American Values and the author of "The Future of Marriage."
