I just thought of this.....

After 7 years of living with a person the state technically grants you being married under the "Common Knowledge Law" (Think thats what its called)
Does this only work for hetro or homo aswell?
I never thought about it till now.

Actually the idea that after 7 years you are married is a common misconception. Common law marriage is recognized in less than half of the U.S. states. And the rules defining when/how one becomes married under common law vary from state to state. (In my state, for instance, a couple need only state publicly that they are married and consumate the marriage.)

Since Massachusetts, the only state where same sex marriage is recognized, is not one of the states where common law marriage is recognized, this would lead me to conclude that there is no such thing as same sex common law marriage in the U.S.

But if it is recognized in less then half of the states then it does exist then right? And the rules from state to state may or may not restrict it just to hetrosexual couples. So infact it could work out you think?
