Tolerance is a social concept, not a legal one. There are plenty of people who are considered 100% equal that we have to tolerate. The annoying woman I work with, for example. Or the guy who cuts me off in traffic. Or internet trolls.

Legal equality does not require social tolerance, though it would be a nice side dish.

Jaxian's post about giving women "civil balloting" instead of the right to vote made it pretty clear that equality matters. There are still misogynists in the world (and on this board), but women still get to vote.

We can acknowledge that equality matters by actually treating people equally, or we can run away from it by trying to come up with "equivalents."

Judging from a few other responses to your post, I wonder... would you like to take a mulligan on this post and rethink it?

In respect of marriage all people are treated equally.

Everyone has the same right to marry and is subject to the same rules and restrictions.

If you want to marry someone of the same sex, or several people, or people legally considered minors, or close relatives, then you have to come up with a new definition for marriage and get a majority of people to agree with it.

Perhaps one of the reasons the homosexual marriage movement faces such stalwart opposition is because they are demanding that everyone else conform to their view, and are intolerant of anyone who won't.

Well, I don't think you are "icky."

I think some of the things homosexuality gives people the urge to do are "icky."

But most people (gay, straight or whatever) don't tend to do their "thing" in public anyway.

So, it's all good.

Just like the bigots who were against African Americans were defeated so will the bigots that are against homosexuals.
--- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope ---

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.

How about the bigots who are against zoophilia, pedophilia, incestuous marriage and polygamy?

Or is your version of a bigot anyone who disagrees with you?

First, I want to thank you wholeheartedly for your support.

But this needs to be said:
Actually, there are still plenty of racists out there.
Their opinion just doesn't happen to coincide with the law anymore.

And the homophobes are welcome to continue being homophobes after their opinion just doesn't happen to coincide with the law anymore.

While tolerance would be nice, it's not one of our requirements.

Perhaps if you gave more tolerance you would receive more.

Well said.
We can't defeat them.
All we can do is work around them, and lead by example.
