I think they both have pushed the boundaries. But I will agree that South Park is worse. But that's to be expected since they are a cable show and Family Guy is network.

Of course, that's what makes the huge difference ... people who are funny.

They have gay jokes on both the shows all the time, usually crude and tasteless - and I've never been offended. The people who are writing the shows are funny.

When people here (no names, you notice) attempt being clever or witty and make gay jokes, they're NOT funny - they're smarmy, nasty, and vicious.

Maybe the whole issue isn't what is/isn't offensive; it's a simple matter of those who think they're witty and clever usually aren't.

Or maybe it's just that some people who are a bit sensitive shouldn't participate in relatively open public forums where they may get their feelings hurt.
One group's funny is another group's hurt feelings.

I think it is a mark of healthy self-worth when we have the ability to laugh at ourselves.

For an example, when someone tells a blonde joke, I do not get all tooty-toot about it. See, I know I am not a "dumb blonde" but even if I was, I would just laugh it off.

Just like when folk tell jokes about women drivers...

I imagine that being gay has its own way of working into some amusing jokes from time to time. Same as jokes about sex at all.

There will always be some tacky things said in the name of humor, but overall, I think that one can tell the spirit in which someone is saying something and it is the spirit of the message more than the actual punch line that can hurt another human being.

I voted "it depends on the joke." I also think it depends on the intention behind the joke as to whether the person posting it is just trying to be mean or funny. It never occured to me that a crack about gay whales would be so offensive to people.

Does this joke cross the line?

Daddy’s Little Girl
______________
A father watched his young daughter playing in the garden. He smiled as he reflected on how sweet and pure his little girl was. Tears formed in his eyes as he thought about her seeing the wonders of nature through such innocent eyes.
Suddenly she just stopped and stared at the ground. He went over to her to see what work of God had captured her attention. He noticed she was looking at two spiders mating.
“Daddy, what are those two spiders doing?” she asked. “They’re mating,” her father replied.
“What do you call the spider on top?” she asked.
“That’s a Daddy Longlegs,” her father answered.
”So, the other one is a Mommy Longlegs?” the little girl asked.
As his heart soared with the joy of such a cute and innocent question he replied “No dear. Both of them are Daddy Longlegs.”
The little girl, looking a little puzzled, thought for a moment, then took her foot and stomped them flat, saying
“Well, we’re not having any of that brokeback mountain crap in our garden.”

I think that much of it falls into the realm of good manners.

If you tell a joke and the other gets offended, simply apologize and find another line of jokes to tell that person. Also, jokes told to a third person, with the intention of irritating someone in hearing range, is both rude and bashing.
