I didn't feel I could personally handle a child with special needs. Yes, they need homes too, but not everybody has the mental capacity to deal with it.

Just curious....

If it had been your natural child with special needs, would you make an effort to 'deal with it'?

There is a guy I work with that fosters kids. Some of these kids live in the worst conditions, and it breaks my heart that I don't have the time or the room to give them all a home. The last two kids he got, seems like they were 5 and 3, and they were the children of the previous husband. Seems the new 'dad' wouldn't let these kids even sit at the same table with the rest of the family. They were treated as second class citizens, and there was no one to give these poor kids any kind of love. 3 and 5.

But hey, you got your little China doll.

And, believe me, when the older boys have moved out, I AM going to start fostering. I've already had the training, and talked to the counselors.

Obviously I would have has to deal with the special needs of a biological child. There is a bit of an irony here that I have not revealed before. My daughter from China has special needs of her own. She has a pretty severe learning disability and does very poorly in school. She is also being very slow to mature mentally. Don't get me wrong, she's a sweet kid and I love her more than anything. There is certainly no guarantee of getting a child without issues no matter where you adopt.

By the way, I happy to see you want to foster children. There is certainly a demand for people like you.

PN, is your child in special education?? I went through that myself.

Yes. More irony: my wife is a special education teacher. My daughter is in 6th grade and has the writing skills of about a 3rd grader, her math skills are nil; however, she can read at her grade level. It's really not that bad.

Just as the need for more foster parents grows, the same is for special education teachers, too.

We both know that it takes very special people to do those things, just like me doing the platelet donations. I'm almost at 12 gallons.
