| gay relationships and marriage is immoral says who? Gay relationships and marriage are immoral. Says who? The Bible? Somehow, I always thought that freedom of religion implied the right to freedom from religion as well. The Bible has absolutely no standing in American law, as was made clear by the intent of the First Amendment (and as was very explicitly stated by the founding fathers in their first treaty, the Treaty of Tripoli, in 1791) and because it doesn't, no one has the right to impose rules on anyone else simply because of something they percieve to be a moral injunction mandated by the Bible. Not all world religions have a problem with homosexuality; many sects of Buddhism, for example, celebrate gay relationships freely and would like to have the authority to make them legal marriages. In that sense, their religious freedom is being infringed. If one believes in religious freedom, the recognition that opposition to gay marriage is based on religious arguments is reason enough to discount this argument. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| It's all moot anyway. There are many Christian churches that support, sanction and perform same sex marriages. (My own main-stream church is one of them.) The Reformed Jewish sect (the largest sect of Jews in the U.S.) and the Conservative branch of Judaism both support and sanction and perform same sex marriages (the only Jews that are anti-gay are those in the Orthodox faith). There are also many religious scholars and ancient religion scholars who have shown that some of the anti-gay statements in the Bible are the result of mistranslation (often INTENTIONAL mistranslation due to political agendas at the time). King James was actually fighting a gay brother who was a student of fortune-telling for his throne at the time the King James translation was being written. Think any of those scriptures about homosexuals and/or witches, fortune tellers, soothsayers, etc. had any hidden agendas? LOL It's all so so so silly. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Conservatism: Self-centered mean-spiritedness fueled by ignorance and misguided self-importance. Bigotry is a social disease. Legalized same-sex marriage almost certainly benefits those same-sex couples who choose to marry, as well as the children being raised in those homes. - David Blankenhorn is president of the New York-based Institute for American Values and the author of "The Future of Marriage." | |||||||||||||||||||||

Separation of church and state didn't mean that we can't look at a situation and deem it f'd up. Prostitution, incest, gambling, pedophilia are also illegal now for one reason or another even though to one extent or another all have been legal at one time or another. As a society we have the right to deem some things unwanted. When we wanted to stop people from marrying at 10 years old, we made it illegal. When we found women selling their bodies and deemed it something we didn't want in our society, we made it illegal. Most people don't want gay people to call their union a "marriage". And while most people use a religious backing for their decision, that's mainly a result of most people in this country are Christian. But until recently 100% of the friggin world banned homosexual marriage. That's not a Christian thing, that's a human thing. Any human can look at the human body and see that homosexuality is an abnormal condition. There is no real reason to include homosexuals under the name marriage. Other than the fact that they feel left out. Well, face it, you were born left out. Left out of the majority of the living species on the planet born with the correct sexual orientation.

| Another generalization that is as sweeping as it is ignorant. Like the majority of people in this country, the majority of gay people are religious, and the majority of gay religious people in this country are Christians. ...aaaand Christians, as far as I know, do not hate the Bible. My wife would be one such homosexual Christian who loves the Bible. That's another apology you owe... wow, you really racked them up today. | |||||||||||||||||||||

The horrible selection of church leaders, like Fred Phelps ( I wont even honor him by calling him Reverend ), Ted Haggard, Pat Robertson, Rod Parsely, Jerry Falwell ( may God rest his old soul!), and their ilk gives religion a very bad name... People like these are the most unchristian of all!
