Two SPIRIT, but I understood what you meant...

I had not really thought of it in that way before, but I am inclined to agree somewhat.

There are many adaptations to deformations in human history, the multi-armed spiritual deity Kali for example..

Kali: The Dark Mother

Can be thought of to represent a physical deformity such as this one that we now "fix".

That would be incorrect. MANY if the Hindu Gods and Goddesses are multi armed or otherwise different in appearance from humans. This was simply a function of the culture.

Unless, of course, you are suggesting that Krishna was designed to represent blue skinned humans...

Not outside of the realm of possibility.
Symptom: Blue skin - CureResearch.com

It would be a social adaptation of something that is otherwise biologically abnormal.

What part of that disproves skin with blue tint. People can be born with any number of defects, like tails.

So some unknown malady that gave a particular human a disfigurement that made him/her look like an elephant is withing the realm of possibility.

Or a winged hawk man? Come now fxashun, let's be real.

Many cultures have had blended human/animal deities. To assume that it is based on a deformity that happened at some point in the past is not very realistic.

We are talking about religion and ancient people here. We have already come to the conclusion that religion doesn't have to be literal. But "something" does inspire the scripture.
Was Mary really a virgin?

What was the real mechanism of the great flood? etc. A 8 limbed child would have freaked an entire society out. Or a siamese twin. Or one of the many other malfunctions that can happen to a human.
