Which state are you referring? It seems it's a matter of perspective...They got what they wanted, a single state decided to allow gay people to marry. Then it changed their law, which initially was to allow only Mass gay residents to marry, to allow other states to do so. Then when that wasn't enough, they reinterpreted RI law to create a loophole so this couple can marry there, even though RI clearly does not recognize gay marriage. So no my good sir, it seems they screwed themselves by leaving their home state to get a marriage based on questionable legal footing. Then Mass screwed them by allowing them to marry. Then they screwed themselves again by all of a sudden, after 10 years, deciding they need a divorce. I don't see how the state is screwing them, their position has never wavered, and is clear as day. RI had nothing to do with this.

from Tristan.

And now from me:

Quote:
The couple knew the laws that were in effect and the laws that were not yet in effect, so I am standing with Fx on this one.
Quote:

No, it doesn't mean that I think that there isn't need for a change in the laws, but til there is, people making choices with what is already established law, must deal with the present state of things.

There is also a law in place that says that I cannot park overnight on the even numbered addressed side of the street on the days that are odd numbers between November 15th and March 15th. That is for the snow plows to be able to do their work. Still if there ain't snow, and I park contrary to the ordinance, who is screwing who?

Am I screwing myself, is the city screwing me, or is Mother Nature screwing everybody???

Think it over in your own reasonable self.

Unless SOME people are allowed to park on both sides of the street whenever they choose, but you are not allowed to do the same, the analogy isn't pertinent.

What I was doing, was not attempting to bring into discussion a point from an exactly crafted analogy, rather to bring into discussion that when a law is in effect, whether it is "fair" or not, we abide by it.

And when a law is not fair, we seek to have it changed. But not by sulking about how we "got screwed" by the government.

Tristan, you are not advocating anarchy ... I mean, are you?

In some states they don't allow abnormal cars on the street....They have yearly inspections and everything.
Just because the vehicle has 4 tires and an engine doesn't mean it's totally "normal".

I'm not quite sure how fighting to overturn unfair and unjust laws would be considered anarchy.

Abnormal people are not banned from marrying - only gay people.

Another pointless analogy.

It depends on the abnormality....Some are some aren't.
Some abnormalities are deemed unfit for regular society and spend their entire existence locked up in Care Facilities. It's all a matter of perspective and societal norms.

Gay people CAN marry..a woman just like any other normal human...except for the few with "abnormalities". Saying gay people are banned from "marrying" is a lie.

No Tristan, fighting to overturn an unfair law is not anarchy.

But sulking on the world wide web about present laws will not overturn them.

What are you doing in the real world to overturn unjust laws?

I only asked about anarchy because you seem to think that the government "screwed" the couple in question. And I say that they entered into the commitment knowing the extent of the present law and the complications that could ensue.

Perhaps it is the gay community that screwed them? By complaining online in a passive way rather than in a venue that would truly serve their fellow gay men and women more productively.
