It depends on who is saying it and to whom I had a friend once whose father was black and whose mother was half Irish and half Cherokee. When his parents divorced he bounced back and forth between the two households a lot.

When they lived in Oklahoma he was the halfbreed.

When they lived in Alabama he was a nigger.

When with his father's family in Chicago he was the white boy.

They were all intended as an insult.
