Gay youth's murder sparks tolerance debate

How many more GLBT youth have to die before this country realizes the importance of education and tolerance?

When I was growing up and a boy showed interest in me, I would tell him I was flattered but not interested. I didn't drag him in back of the chemistry lab and put a bullet in his skull.

This same kind of hostility (including bullying, harrassment, and beatings) is prevalent in schools all over America. Yet people like garysher would prefer that homosexuality is never mentioned in schools so that this kind of hate and intolerance continues to breed.

I say the time has come when we should be required to teach and enforce tolerance in our schools. What do you all say? We're never going to prevent kids from being beaten up, harrassed, and even murdered by pretending they don't exist.

How do you teach people to get used to a boy wearing high heels and makeup. That's friggin freaky. No one should have killed the dude, but that is NOT the behaviour of a male of the human species and you are gonna have an uphill battle to make that not raise a few eyebrows.

Why didn't someone try to educate him not to come out in public looking like that. It's f'd up to "educate" everyone else to conform to the one-offs.

Instead of wasting time trying to persuade everyone else to conform with your own bigoted views I think it makes far more sense to work toward dismantling America's lunatic, arcane gun culture.

You can't applaud Joe Horn one minute then condemn this kind of needless slaughter the next.

Unlike OnThe Left, I believe in doing everything possible to prevent hostility toward and the murder of anybody - not just homosexuals.

Instead of trying to persuade kids to accept boys dressed as girls, why not work toward teaching kids that guns are evil and unnecesssary.

Let's require that groups of vigilante gun-toting bigots - like New Haven's Pink Pistols - are banned.

Good luck trying to persuade normal people that it's ok for men to dress up like girls.

That's where some people just get ignorant..."wearing makeup" can apply to many situations. Just as "breast implants" range from corrective surgery to the cartoonish crfap that some women do to their bodies. In this case we specifically have a young man who..was a gay eighth-grader who used to come to school in makeup, high heels and earrings. Far beyond the "wear makeup" that you guys are trying to present. And from this characterization, that's not "gay" as I understand it, sounds more like transgendered to me. From what I gather, gay men are still men, they just like other men. Wearing high heels and makeup isn't part of the deal.

I think not.

If a boy goes to school dressed as a girl then don't be surprised if he gets taunted by the other kids.

If the kid was really concerned he would have dressed and behaved like a boy, instead of expecting the rest of the world to make a U-turn to accommodate his weirdness.

Of course he shouldn't have been murdered for his folly, but that's the way things are in gun-crazy America.

Just ask all the "vigilante justice" fans - the Joe Horn and Mary Winkler supporters on this forum and elsewhere.
