Cuba's Coming Out
Attempting to combat vestiges of 1960's public bigotry and discrimination against gays, the Cuban government has seemed to be engaged in a gay rights campaign that is unparalleled by many state-run campaigns around the world. Marking a more public engagement, the Cubans held a large gay rights rally last week (click for more info) where criticisms and thanks alike were directed at the Cuban government.

Activists and major elements of the government seem to be pushing for marriage equality under the law sometime soon. The events seem interesting both from a perspective of Cuban politics and gay rights around the world.

They must be the first communist nation to embrace gays and lesbians there. That's good to hear. Thanks for sharing.

it's hard to believe that the U.S. will be behind CUBA (not to mention South Africa!) when it comes to equal citizens' rights, isn't?!

we've come a long way, baby

Among other things. Despite Cuba's failure (perhaps inability) to institute true socialism, they've managed to provide, or at least strive for, many social equalities that just aren't present in most nations.

It's interesting to see homophobia largely reduced to a minority in the ignorant/poorer communities in Cuba, a third world country, whilst it is still prevalent in even the most affluent communities in the United States, the richest country in the world. Clearly, it's not so much the amount of resources at a nation's disposal but their priorities and how they make use of such resources. I think the example of Cuba's top-quality (in the Latin America region) social institutions (education, health care, etc.) and now social progressions shows us, if anything, the vast potential of the United States.
