California Supreme Court refuses to delay gay marriages
The California Supreme Court has decided that those seeking equality in marriage shouldn't have to wait any longer.

The court has ruled that marriage is a basic civil right. This is EXCELLENT news for gay and lesbian couples who have been waiting for years to finally marry.

Quote:
The California Supreme Court today has rejected a request by conservative and religious groups to delay implementing its legalization of same-sex marriage until after the November election.

The ruling, made on a 4-3 vote, means that gay marriage could begin soon -- perhaps as early as later this month.

State officials announced last week that California counties are authorized to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples beginning June 17.

Conservatism: Self-centered mean-spiritedness fueled by ignorance and misguided self-importance.

Bigotry is a social disease.

Legalized same-sex marriage almost certainly benefits those same-sex couples who choose to marry, as well as the children being raised in those homes. - David Blankenhorn is president of the New York-based Institute for American Values and the author of "The Future of Marriage."

This decision clearly shows the bias of these four activist judges, who not only flout the will of Californian voters, but have dismissed the explicit demands of at least 10 other states, who may be threatened by this decision if homosexuals travel to California, get 'married' then return home and demand their state recognise this travesty.

It would have been far wiser for them to wait a few months until the result of the ballot is known regarding a Constitutional Amendment, which would require voiding these bogus unions.

But at least we know the real agenda of these activist judges.

I thought you would be pleased with this news.

They never put interracial marriage up for a vote in the last 60's either.

Equality is guaranteed us; it's not up for a popularity vote.

Not an accurate comparison - more a relic of America's apartheid policies.

You already have equality.

The issue is whether we want to redefine the institution of marriage to accommodate homosexuals, and then other groups of sexual deviants.

Gary, how do we have equality? Seriously. You can marry the person you love. I can't. Marriage is about love and commitment. It has been repeatedly deemed a "basic fundamental right" by courts all over the country.

It's exactly like telling the man who's in love with someone of another race, "you can marry any white woman you choose, just like everyone else." That "equality" doesn't do him any good if he happens to love someone who's not white. Just like racial marriage discrimination was overturned in '67 via Loving v Virginia, gender-based marriage discrimination will overturned in our lifetime. It's already being overturned in Massachusetts, and now, California.

I can't either, unless that person and I meet all the qualifying criteria.

For example, I can't marry my neighbour's wife nor his 10-year old daughter. Same as you.

Marriage is about love and commitment.

So why does your side keep bleating about 113983 legal benefits??

If it was only about love and commitment why mention the pension and insurance discounts??

It has been repeatedly deemed a "basic fundamental right" by courts all over the country.

Absolutely. Marriage between one man and one woman is a right.

Comparisons with racial discrimination are odious, and you know it.

Read the ruling from NY's highest Court (July 2007):

"By limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples, New York is not engaging in sex discrimination. The limitation does not put men and women in different classes, and give one class a benefit not given to the other. Women and men are treated alike -- they are permitted to marry people of the opposite sex, but not people of their own sex. This is not the kind of sham equality that the Supreme Court confronted in Loving; the statute there, prohibiting black and white people from marrying each other, was in substance anti-black legislation. "

This opinion has found concurrence with "
courts all over the country".

Actually they're apt. Discrimination is discrimination.
