Sadly, as long as we're a society with unchecked homophobia and legalized discrimination, these kinds of stories will continue to show up.

Conservatism: Self-centered mean-spiritedness fueled by ignorance and misguided self-importance.

Bigotry is a social disease.

Legalized same-sex marriage almost certainly benefits those same-sex couples who choose to marry, as well as the children being raised in those homes. - David Blankenhorn is president of the New York-based Institute for American Values and the author of "The Future of Marriage."

Sadly this kid is just one more of the 15,000+ annual victims of America's crazy gun mentality.

I agree that this particular murder was the result of homophobia. But there is another aspect of this that concerns me deeply.

The shooter, Brandon, was destined to murder somebody sooner or later. His father shot his mother. And (in another incident) choked her "until she was almost unconscious."

This kid never had a chance.

Quote:
Like Larry, Brandon had his share of troubles. His parents, Kendra and Bill McInerney, had a difficult, tempestuous relationship. In 1993, Kendra alleged that Bill pointed a .45 handgun at her during a drunken evening and shot her in the arm, according to court records. She and Bill split in 2000, when Brandon was 6. One September morning, a fight broke out after Kendra accused her husband of stealing the ADHD medication prescribed to one of her older sons from her first marriage. Bill "grabbed Kendra by the hair," and "began choking her until she was almost unconscious," according to Kendra's version of the events filed in court documents. He pleaded no contest to corporal injury to a spouse and was sentenced to 10 days in jail. In a December 2001 court filing for a restraining order against Kendra, he claimed that she had turned her home into a "drug house." "I was very functional," Kendra later explained to a local newspaper, in a story about meth addiction. By 2004, she had entered a rehab program, and Brandon went to live with his father. But he spent years caught in the middle of a war.

Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

It wonders me why Brandon was never in a foster home instead of being caught in a world of violence in his immediate family?

Although a gun was used in this incident, a gun did not kill Matt Shephard, homophobic hatred did....the very same homophobic hatred fueled by people like you.

You are part of the problem.

Okay, I have read the last artical posted, and here is my view:

Although it is sad that Larry was killed, one cannot deny that this kid was one vile little shit. By that I mean parading himself around, and even making out that he gave Brandan a scratch when they were 'together'.
Wearing makeup and defying orders to wash it off, saying 'it's my right' and making the boys 'squirm' as well as looking at them as they changed and calling them 'hot'.
If I were a guy at this school I would have decked this kid.
Yes, there is nothing wrong with being gay, but DO NOT make others feel uncomfortable, and this seems to be just what Larry enjoyed doing. He thrived on making those other boys feel awkward.

As to Brandan, sure he had a bad childhood, and seeing your dad kill your mother can't be all that good. But it didn't make him kill Larry. His childhood has nothing to do with the crime that was committed. Brandan chose to kill Larry, he didn't kill him because he had a bad childhood. He killed him because Larry gave him the willies and he wanted him gone.
I can just imagine this kid'll argue in court 'but I had a bad childhood'.

Right, and a person sexually molested as a child is going to grow up and molest children, are they? Give me a break. Take responsibilty.

Would Brandan have killed Larry had Larry not stalked him, hit on him? Possibly not. Obviously Brandan made the choice to kill Larry, but I think Larry needs to bear some responsibilty for his past actions. How would Brandan have felt about Larry's interest in him? Would it have been possible to ignore Larry?
I don't think this is entirely a gay rights arguement, as Larry's foster father says.
Larry sexually harrassed Brandan, and that should not have happened, whether he was gay or not.
I think the school should have stepped in and sent Larry home until he was ready to show respect toward his fellow students as he seemed to show little respect to his male classmates in the sense he enjoyed making them uncomfortable.

Agree to disagree, guys...it is sad, but Larry should have been given a serious talking to and made to sort himself out.

Thank you. I read the entire artical in full and then typed up my view
I am all for gay rights but I don't see this case as being homophobic, rather, a kid killed another kid simply because he was being harrassed - it's a bullying issue rather than a gay one, I feel.

We need to see both sides of the story here, and put ourselves in Brandans shoes, instead of Larry's.
