In addition, it was originally a derogatory name that the French called the Normans. From start to finish - a derogatory term.

I think the only reason they'd get upset would be if it were true. Also, you scenario is flawed. The word hasn't been used willy-nilly here, it's been used to describe lengthy, demonstrated behavior and opinions.

In the rest of the English-speaking world the word "fag" means a cigarette

• noun Brit. informal a cigarette.

Personally I never use the word fag to mean homosexual

But you still haven't explained why "fag" and "homo" are derogatory?

And according to your logic, if I called you a "bigoted fag" then one would cancel out the other
