Iran halted nuclear weapons work in '03

Iran halted work toward a nuclear weapon under international scrutiny in 2003 and is unlikely to be able to produce enough enriched uranium for a bomb until 2010 to 2015, a U.S. intelligence report says.

Analysis: Report takes steam out of Iran hawks - CNN.com

The new National Intelligence Estimate on Iran says Iran halted work on nuclear weapons under international scrutiny in 2003 and is unlikely to be able to produce enough enriched uranium for a bomb until 2010 to 2015.
The report says there's "high confidence" Iran stopped developing nuclear weapons in autumn 2003, and did so because of international pressure. That's a major turnaround from a 2005 report that Iran was determined to push ahead regardless of international pressure.

But, but, but...

Didn't you hear the President this morning.

They stopped but they could start back. We have to take action to insure that they don't do what they might be thinking about doing even though we don't have any evidence of them thinking it.
Right now America spends $700 billion every year on foreign oil. That's our money going overseas when it could be staying here. We have to stop this.

Bush claims to hear voices (God) and he prays to a ghost, I'm not surprised he spends his time chasing ghosts.

I think this news is very worrying. If our best intelligence dates back to 2003 what if they re-started nuclear weapons production in 2004 or since??

And why didn't the Iranians say they had stopped and allow the IAEA to verify?

What if this intelligence is wrong?

And why would the Bush administration make this announcement if it reduces any momentum for attacking Iraq?

Could this be a ploy to reduce pressure on oil prices?

Tune in next week.

Good questions.

I'm just curious if the NIC would ever provide to the public the actual means with which they reached their conclusions.

I mean, the .pdf file that is linked to this story and message thread is just a summary without the actual data.

And, in my best "Where's the beef" voice, where's the data?

Hmmm, now I'm confused.

In October 2002, a National Intelligence Estimate report stated that "Iraq has continued its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs in defiance of UN resolutions and restrictions. Baghdad has chemical and biological weapons as well as missiles with ranges in excess of UN restrictions; if left unchecked, it probably will have a nuclear weapon during this decade."

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/...%20release.pdf

So then, are we to trust the conclusions stated in this new report on Iran from this same government body?

And, if they were wrong about Iraq in 2002, then why couldn't they also be wrong about Iran in 2007?

I think the difference might be that this report is made up of 16 intelligence agencies in agreement, that brought this to the attention of the White House before the president began warning us of the threat of Iran's nuclear weapons program. The point being that the president should not have focused publically on the threat, until the information was proven to be sound.
