| Alright, I'll play the devil's advocate and speak out against pornography. I think that it should be regulated, and eliminated from the free airwaves. What people pay for, they should have the right to view, but what is on the public radio, television and domain should be tightly guarded. Claims have been made that pornography is degrading to women, and shows them as nothing more than sex slaves, to be used for what ever sexually pleases a man. As far a ClearChannel goes, it is a private corporation and has the right to say what it will or will not play on the air. I applaud ClearChannel for taking this stance. It is exercising its right to choose (oh can't you just hear the women's organization screeching over my use of that phrase As far as Christians go, yes they believe that pornography is a sin, if you lust in your heart for a woman, in their eyes you have already committed adultery. While I believe in the right of free speech, we have also shown that the government can regulate speech ( you cannot shout FIRE in a crowded building, nor can you play an ad targeted at a Candidate within 30 days of an election). Since Christians believe that we should have moral values and standards, and that they believe that allowing pornography on the public airwaves shows acceptance they speak out against it. The famous if you don't like what you are watching just change the channel does not always work. What about when parents can't be there to monitor what their children are watching? Or in the case Janet Jackson, when a family is watching an event that they believe would be free of pornography, and it is shoved in their face. Many have already exercise their right to free speech by not buying the artistic endeavours of Janet Jackson, the Dixie Chicks or 2 Live Crew. However, at the same time these endeavours should not make their way onto the public airwaves. While I believe that Howard Stern should have the freedom to say what he wants, at the same time members of society have a right to determine what is and what is not decent. While I will not go all the way and say the pornography should be banned altogether. But at the same time, I believe that society should have the power to say what will be viewed or seen on the public airwaves and domain. The Supreme Court has used the idea of the standards of decency to rule the death penalty to minors unconstitutional, while I do not agree with the decision, it is the law of the land. So we can have standards of decency when it involves the 5th Amendment, but not the First. I am sorry, but either it should apply evenly to all, or be discarded. People complain about those on the religious right, and sometimes they do go to far. Once upon a time, on television married couples were shown in separate beds, well we have come a long way from that, and I agree that times changes. However, as an adult I must ask, do we not know what goes on in a bedroom behind a close door? So why do we have to show it??? Have we become that lost that we cannot use our imagination? The Cosby show for years showed Claire and Cliff in bed together, but would rely upon our own imaginations to fill in the blanks when the picture faded to black or they went under the covers. Not showing the sex and the body parts took nothing away from the show. If a show needs to rely on the body parts and the sex to maintain viewer-ship they I will say that it is no better than porn and should not be on public airwaves. As citizens we have a right to say what we think is right and wrong. Christians believe that we should have mores that all society agrees upon. Once again the individual is foolish while the species is wise (Russell Kirk). Society should have the right to determine what those values will be. dmk Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles -Russell Kirk- | |||||||||||||||||||||

| The lord are god did not give women their bodies and shape for exploitation, he blessed them with that gift to satisfy their men, and to rear young. Nothing more. Not only is pornography an exploitation and degredation of women, it is also a sin. It stirs up aggression in the blood of negros and other lesser races as well. | |||||||||||||||||||||
