| Liberal Thought I don't get why being a "liberal" carries such a negative connotation amongst conservatives in the USA. Why is being a liberal a bad thing? How are liberals evil? How do they threaten the american way of life? How are they wishy washy pansies? I don't claimto know anything, this is just what i hear fox calling liberals. And i was wondering why. | I don't know about your questions but I do know that the world progresses towards a more liberal view every second of every day. Few would argue that the world is more conservative now then it was 50 or 100 years ago. Conservatives are just speed bumps on the sustained path to an ever more liberal world. --- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope --- There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Also since our politics are so polarized between two powerful parties, you only have one bad guy. The idea that there should be or is a negative connotation to "liberal" or "conservative" in politics is absurd and its detrimental to the political process. All the stereotypes should be thrown out and the blame is on both sides. I hear a lot of liberals complain about this yet they say things to the same effect about conservatives. Almost everyone is guilty of it sometimes, I know I certainly have been. But really it's just bad, what's more important is that it seems like the majority of politicians right now, Dem or Rep, are fucking morons. But it don't take much to get me by So just booze me up and get me high Ween | |||||||||||||||||||||

True. It is probably a result of the locked two party system. --- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope --- There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. | AmfLiberal is correct in my opinion. Quote:
And the labeling of issues is completely subject to change. To wit: the reform of factory farm cruelty has been considered a 'liberal' issue. Few people know that Pat Buchanan embraced this wholeheartedly last year, calling it a conservative issue. Quote:

| Yeah, the world is getting more liberal every day. I don't call that progress. We have kids shooting kids in school. We have drive by shootings even where I live now in the boonies. We have more and more drugs, more and more unwed mothers and deadbeat dads, schools turning out kids who can't read or make change for a 20. Yeah, the liberal way is really progress isn't it. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Even so, those things are much better than public executions. They're better than a relentless despot reigning over the unsespecting populace left in ignorance. It is better than thousands perhaps millions being sacraficed for ignorance and superstition; it is better than ruthless armies clashing together over what prophet said what about what man-invented God. Its better than sending millions of people of a certain race into death chambers or work camps. It is better than the relentless and inhuman slave labor from peasantry being cast down to self-proclaimed nobility, to serfdom, all the way to millions of workers being paid five cents a week so that a few can recieve record-breaking profits in their "always cheap" supermarkets. It is better than the thought of a possible prevailing of ignorance and supersition over the Enlightenment and scientific revolutions. All history tells us that we are on a path to progression, and whether that progression takes the name of liberalism, socialism, democracy, republicanism, or protestant; if you look thoughout all of modern history, "liberalism" in the sense of change of the old into the new, has served as the advent of humanism and wellbeing. And all throughout history, this liberalism has had opposition; those that don't want to change because they're too content or believe they're content with the current system. But if it is one thing that history tells us, this progression has been on its path for hundreds of years and is not stopping. Whether you like it or not, eventually scientists are going to use the benifits of stem cell research to cure many different horrible diseases saving millions of lives. Whether you like it or not, there will be religious equality, science and truth will out-value religious supersition. Whether you like it or not, there will be social equality. Whether you like it or not, there will eventually be the basics for decent human life for all. Whether you like it or not, there will no longer be the exploitation of the masses for the benifit and profit of a few. | Keep holding on conservatives as the world PROGRESSES towards an ever more liberal existence. You fear change, that is why you are conservative in the first place. --- help me Instant Runoff Voting, you're my only hope --- There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Wrong. The only change I fear is senseless change done for reasons of political correctness, where good things get trashed by people who have no clue what should be valued, just for the sake of change. If fear of loss is a component in conservatism, chronic discontent is a component in liberalism. | |||||||||||||||||||||
