I know what you're saying about the team. I'm just saying I think Foulke's had trouble this year because of his health, not his ability as a pitcher. I think he's still got great years ahead of him, with that nasty change up.
Yea I know. Yea 8-1 Baltimore...

He hit 94 on the gun in his first or second triple-A start. In his first appearence, he was only hitting around 89. It's going to take his arm a little while to get used to warming up quickly. He threw much better yesterday though, you're right. I think he'll be fine and it will be even better when Foulke comes back and we can start him.

Schilling gets his first save, and looks pretty good doing it too. Fastball 93-94 mph.

Yup. He's looked great in his second and third appearences, picking up the save last night. It's tough to nail him for that first one against the Yanks. The pitch that A-Rod hit out of the ballpark was not a bad pitch at all, if anything, maybe a little up. A-Rod is an incredible baseball player, he can hit those pitches out of the park. Can't blame Schill for that. Nice to see him gear up to 94 with 2 strikes.

I just came upon this thread. I have to admit this idea for Schilling doesn't seem that far-fetched to me. Yes, at the time of my posting this in the last day of July 2007, the Bosox are still far ahead in their division. The idea may not be just to make Foulke mad; even though it has. It might be a career- extending move for Schilling. Its not without precedence; as both Dennis Eckersly and John Smoltz were originally starters who moved into the bullpen in the closer roll- and excelled at it.
John Smoltz returned to a starter role, but it is so obvious to me that at this stage of his career, he would best be served back as a closer. In last season as well as this season, Atlanta has an exorbitant amount of blown saves.
I think Schilling has lost some of the snap from his pitches-that comes from wear and tear over time- but he still has movement on his pitches. I could see this move being made; Foulke's attitude notwithstanding.

First, out of the bullpen it will be easier for him to work back up to full strength where he can throw 100+ pitches every 5 games. Secondly, while helping himself, Schilling can also help the team by being a dominant pitcher in the late innings (yet to be proven). It works both ways. The only reason they're doing this is because Foulke is on the DL with a knee injury, and if he gets surgery he's out 4-6 weeks. The plan is that Schilling can perform in the bullpen, and then start when Foulke is healthy.
That does not sound like a bad idea. Maybe Schilling will be at full strength, starting, when I visit Boston in a couple of months. Man, I am excited to be visiting Boston and Fenway Park for the first time.

Whether closer or set-up man, I still believe that this is good move for Schilling. I appluad Francona and Epstien for it. Schilling's experience alone has value that cannot be discounted so easily. So, hopefully everything works out fine. I not a big Bosox fan, but I do enjoy the rivalry with the Yankees.

Schilling threw 77 pitches for the Paw Sox tonight (60 for strikes) he should be starting for the big club Sunday on normal rest.
Don't look for Foulke though I think he retired.(this thread is from 2005)
Eric Gagne that's a different story!

Gagne, Okajima, Papelbon......shut up!
