| WHO DEY? WHO DEY? WHO GONNA BEAT THE BENGALS?? Well it was the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the 72nd meeting, the first ever in post-season, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cinncinati Bengals 31 - 17 in the final game of the Wild Card Weekend. After an emotional first have which saw the Bengals score on each of their first three possessions, the Steelers struggled but eventually turned the game around. After Carson Palmer was injured on his first throw of the game and did not return, Jon Kitna took over and continued to drive the Bengals. The emotions were high for Cinncinati, their first appearance in the Playoffs since 1990 and having lost their starting quarterback. But this game was a tale of two halves. The first half we saw the emotion in the play of the Bengals, and in the second half, we saw that momentum run out. The most vivid moment for me watching the game was seeing Chad "The Mouth" Johnson on the sidelines watching in disbelief as the Steelers scored. Flashback, week 7 of the 2004 season, the undefreated Philadelphia Eagles facing the Pittsburgh Steelers, and "Terrible" Terrel Owens sitting on the sides, delegated to applauding after the Steelers scored. Johnson and Owens both had something in common in their games, neither of the scored a touchdown. The road to the AFC north may run through Cinncinati, and Cinncinati may be the divisional champions, and even as Chad Johnson contends, it may be a fact that we will have to get use to, but for now, the AFC North still belongs to the Steelers. Having a high powered offense is definitely a plus in the NFL, but to win Championships, you need a defense that does not give up 31 points. The Bengals definitely have one of the best offenses in the league, however, their defense relied on luck and the offense giving their team a lead in leading the league in turnovers. In this game, we saw a Steelers team that used short efficient passes from play action, that eventually lead to some long deep threats. The Bengals defense was unable to force a turnover. On the other side of the ball, after bending and breaking in the first half, the Steelers defense was able to rebound, bending but not breaking in the second half, as the defense forced 2 Kitna interceptions, and held the Bengals scoreless. Next week we will see another stop on the Bus Route as Pittsburgh travels to Indianapolis. The second time around the Steelers will hopefully be better prepared for the Colts. The Steelers have been able to remove two demons off their backs this year thus far, winning in a dome (Minnesota) and winning on the road in the playoffs (Cinncinati). Next week should be a great game. dmk Conservatism, I repeat is not an ideology. It does not breed fanatics....But if you want men who seek, reasonably and prudently, to reconcile the best in wisdom of our ancestors with the change which is essential to a vigorous civil social existence, then you will do well to turn to conservative principles -Russell Kirk- | |||||||||||||||||||||
