Prohibiting a populace from something they clearly want, simply to enforce some twisted notion of morality set forth by a minority will not work. All it does is criminalize normal people.

I think the point is that the clearly unintended consequences of disarming law abiding citizens will not stop the criminals or the criminally insane, and may, indeed, provide them with a clear killing field in many instances, by removing the protection offered by law abiding gun owners. Gun free zones are wide open to criminals, and only give a false feeling of safety that in reality makes the innocent all the more vulnerable.
