Exactly where in the "western world" do you think people actually live in peace?
I'm remembering all too well Beslan, Columbine, and many other multiple shootings....and statistics CLEARLY show that the best remedy to this, shockingly, is concealed carry laws that mean someone nearby will be carrying and able to stop the carnage.

Even the campus police were unarmed! What good could they have done against this lunatic even if they had been there?

We know, because they even say so, that the police do not protect us. It's not even their job. So who is going to protect my grandkids should they need to go to school? Why, reasonable people with the facts and logic will know that armed law abiding citizens will protect them.

Your point is valid, Vharlow. I disagree with Gary on many things, but I am totally against "concealed-carry laws". Probably because I think they would bring about "vigilantism". People might start taking they law into their own hands; and then you end up with the "Wild West" society that Gary speaks of.
I believe that police (public or private) forces should be properly trained and armed. As you said, the campus police were not. Could they have prevented this tragedy? No.
Further reports on this young man's erractic behavior underline to me that; again; this kid was a time bomb waiting to explode. The intervention factor was sorely needed here- ultimately to the sorrow of many parents and one fine academic institution.
It is easy for me to sit here and say this, but the truth is:There is only so much intervention that can be given until a crime is actually commited. I think this boy's parents should have had him institutionalized awhile back when they noticed the danger signs.

Pretty much every other country apart from the US, gets by without the need to carry guns.

Have you ever spent any time outside of this country????

What "statistics" might they be?

So your solution is to send our children off to school and college armed with guns??

And to arm all of the faculty as well for good measure??

DO you realise how ludicrously draconian you sound??

What does that mean?

Careful there. Maybe an IP location and a call to the authorities in your local school district are in order!

That is what I was wondering.

Gary, check out the article at this link.

Interview with John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime

John Lott made his famous study starting with the notion that guns were dangerous and having them everywhere was a bad thing. His own study changed his mind.

Have you EVER actually looked at evidence that doesn't agree with what you think to be true? I believe that even many Democrats now agree since these stark statistics have been made known.

Your utterly ridiculous statement that my solution is to send our kids off to colleges with guns is just another of your ways of twisting what is said. I said concealed carry or shall carry laws make it possible for law abiding citizens to have their weapons with them. That doesn't mean everyone should carry a gun, or needs to, for that matter. The mere fact that someone COULD be carrying where a criminal wants to do evil is a DETERENT. And those less inclined to carry guns, or to even defend themselves, are indeed protected by the fact that criminals don't know if they have one or not! Criminals don't know if they can just walk in and start shooting without getting shot on the spot by a law abiding hero.

You frankly have not said anything definitive, not quoted any statistics, not mentioned any facts at all. You are being emotional and irrational. It's understandable, but it's also not going to help protect you or anyone else to set up gun free zones. Only law abiding citizens will abide by those rules, and criminals won't.

WE've had concealed carry laws in many states for some time now. If there were going to be a great increase in vigilantism there would be figures to show that.

I happen to have a license that allows me to carry a concealed weapon. And they passed in Missouri the right to also carry concealed weapons about 2 years ago?

Hasn't encouraged anyone to take the law into their own hands that I've seen. Vigilantism isn't on the rise in Missouri.
