At another forum, I only read at, a man from Australia wrote this just today:

Quote:
Please America your guns must be destroyed
You do not need to carry guns in your car or have them in your homes
In Australia after the Port Arthur massacre. We as a nation handed in our guns despite what the gun lobby said to instil fear. This has removed the most deaths in domestic conflicts and we have return to a freedom to enjoy life again without this shadow of fear it seem USA lives in.

So this guy feels that safety is worth surrendering freedom? I do pity him.
Fight the good fight, and die with the enemy's heart in your hand.

You know Tadpole, I must admit, I get confused on this issue.

I am not so sure that freedom is the first and most basic foundation for humanity.

Does one need total and unbridled freedom to establish peace?

Or should peace be what brings freedom?

Strange, but unfortunately true.

There's always a cost for freedom and peace. Which is paid for in blood and tears.

The fact is that prohibition is not an answer. Education is the answer. The problem with education is that it is hard and it can take a while to work, and in the U.S. we demand instant gratification.

In my experience, the tougher path is often more rewarding...
Fight the good fight, and die with the enemy's heart in your hand.

Why do you see the two as mutually exclusive???

Don't you think that the Australian guy who wrote that, and the rest of his fellow-citizens, enjoy freedom just as much as the US, if not more?

This bizarre notion that guns = freedom is not shared by any of the other western democracies.

It is assumed in the sense that the drafters of the US COnstitution decided to include it as a right.

If they had included a right to smoke dope that would also be assumed.

It is assumed in the sense that most other countries with Constitutions chose to exclude gun ownership as a right

As a citizen of this country this gives me the right to own (I never said carry) a gun as long as I meet certain requirements that are specified by the state that I live in.
Check out Post 317.Concealed carry has not increased but decreased the amount of violent crime that occurs in states that have passed this legislation.
Concealed carry has not reduced gun-related crime to the levels found in other western democracies that have weaned themselves off a gun habit.

Variations between states are only academic. Guns may be banned in DC, but you can drive 20 minutes and be in a different state where guns can be easily bought

What about all the other countries that have peace and freedom WITHOUT the need to own guns??
