Texas has what they refer to as a 'castle' law. This basically says that a homeowner may use deadly force to protect his property, or the property of someone else if he has been asked to protect their property.

A lot of states are passing laws of this nature. Florida has a 'stand your ground' law that allows someone to use deadly force against someone they feel is threatening them anywhere, not just on their own property. Before the passage of this law, if someone was threatening you in public, and you could retreat, you were required to before blowing them away. You don't have to anymore.

Needless to say, Florida's homicide rate has gone up.

Welcome back to the days of the old west.

Is there a correlation here? Can you link to a credible and reliable source on this increase?

How many armed people in the state of Florida have shot another in self defense since the law went into effect?

Yes...it would be interesting to find a valid list of stats, comparing the number of those shooting out of self-defense or to initiate crime.

I might see what I can dig up on ixquick.

I am also a reasonable person. There is the 2nd amendment case coming up.

What will the Supreme Court say?

Interesting stuff will be happening in the next decade.

I can't find the original article I had on the Brady shooting, but this one has some stats.

Some of these shootings can't even be claimed as 'self defense' since in at least one case, the criminal was shot while running away. No charges filed.

A childhood friend was shot in the back by a tranist cop. The cop had a bad history and political connections. He was an accident waiting to happen. My friend? Story is he was stealing a few rolls of tape and other items off a parked vehicle that was open. A scuffle ensued.

There are criminals and there are crimes and then...

Why would somebody shoot a criminal in the back? What did the criminal do?

--

but we digress. stats on the increase.

I gotta run. I'll try and find some later on. Either way it should be educational

oops, I almost forgot.

My friend bled to death in the street while the police refused an offer of medical assistance from a registered nurse getting off work just three blocks away.

He tried to steal a car. When confronted by the owners husband, he attempted to run away. He was shot in the back of the leg. No charges filed against the shooter. The kid was 15 btw.

He got shot in the leg? He didn't bleed to death? Hopefully he won't be stealing any more cars. It seems a little drastic...the shooting. But what is the crime rate in that area? Why are people so angry?

No, he lived. I'm not sure what the crime rate in Florida is, but I do know that, like Texas, Florida has a large illegal immigrant population.

My problem with these laws, is that they allow any yahoo with a gun to 'shoot first and ask questions later'.

To my mind, if a crime doesn't carry the death penalty by the courts; Why should it carry the death penalty by Bubba.
