start your own fucking topics on banning guns if u want, this ones about .50 cals and i think they should be banned, a .50 cal sniper rifle from well over 500 yards away can blow someones head clean off, u don't need that much fire power for hunting
there is absolutely no excuse for what I am about to do

You don't need anything but 1 and 2 shot rifles for hunting.

I personally see no reason why an individual should need a .50 caliber weapon. Some people say that banning these guns would infringe on the rights of hunters, but what the hell kind of animal are you going to hunt that requires that sort of hole to bring it down, and why would you ever need to own one within a city's limits? Look at the gun violence rates per capita for small towns vs. large cities, and you will find a huge discrepancy. Why? It's because in the small town, people buy their gun for hunting, and the gun of choice is not a semiautomatic hundgun (*surprise!*). Then they have to take a hunter saftey course. They don't just walk down to the pawnshop and walk out with an easily concealable weapon with a high capacity magazine and absolutely NO value as a hunting tool.
As for the self protection arguement, since when do you have to put a hole the size of a friggin' crock pot in someones gut to protect yourself? There are many many many viable (and non-lethal) alternatives to this sort of crap. Number one alternative being your telephone. Call the police, let them do their job. Going all vigilante won't solve the problem, it'll probably just get you convicted in the long run.
I realize that in some instances, the phone isn't an option. I've heard that it's hard to dial the numbers while you're being raped, for instance. Well check this out: Pepper spray. Tazer. Stun Gun. Sap. A Loud Freakin' Whistle.
I realize that I'm rambling, but I'll sum it up real quick.
There is no reason for weapons like this to be in a person's private arsenal. If there is a reason, and I just haven't seen it yet, then I want a cannon.

Sorry, I got swept up in the typing spirit and forgot to address that final point. Far be it from me to pull on my jack boots and help this country's slow slide into totaliarianism, but I do believe that there is no room on the streets for these guns. When the founding fathers talked about the right to bear arms, they were marching around with single shot muskets. I doubt they were forseeing arms the size of bears.
However, I do think that the gov't stating that the need for this law is "to protect against terrorists" is a huge load of bullshit. The general populace will eventually reaize that the government is just putting all of their agendas under the "terrorists are bad" argument to keep people from disagreeing.

"Plastic lawn flamingos are terrorist aids! They all must go!"
"What? that's ridiculous!"
"Are you questioning us? Do you WANT to help the terrorists?"
"No... I guess lawn flamingos are bad."

"The leader of genius must make all enemies to appear to be in the same category"

-Adolf Hitler.

hi to all of ya by the way, I'm johnny english just seeing how you guys debate things over here Incidentally we are in the middle of a proposed ban on my hobby, airsoft guns (those toy guns with orange paint on the end ) and while it's hardly constitutional, it pisses me off in the way gun control must piss you off, and for similar reasons.

However I believe a .50 cal weapon has no purpose other than to plot evil deeds; what are you gonna shoot with that kinda thing that might survive the impact to make identification possible?!

Unless your hunting bears (is that legal?) from a mile away it's over the top.

And if your hunting anything from a mile away your a bit of a coward to be honest. That or a shit hunter.

First off, I'd say if you are hunting from a mile away you are a fantastic hunter. There is a reason that Snipers are considered the best marksmen in the world. Secondly there is other large game besides bears.

Finally, what if you simply want the weapon to hone your skills? I own several .50 caliber weapons. I think some of you may be mis understanding what constitutes a .50 cal and what claiber means....

Caliber is a ratio of the width of the projectile vs. the length og the barrel of the weapon. Therefore it is not always an equal size.

When I say .50 caliber most of you seem to be picturing this;

However a .50 cal can also be any of the following...

All I am trying to demonstrate here is that by banning a 'caliber' of weapon, you are making a broad, sweeping ban. It may seem specific, but it is not at all, and you are protecting no one, making nothing safer. The simple fact of the matter is that criminals do not get their guns legally any way.

You know how I feel about it. I know that most guns used in crimes are illegally obtained. That is why I think we should work on getting ALL guns out of the public's hands. Societies don't crumble when the populous is unarmed. In fact it makes them more safe. And as we have seen in Iraq an armed populous won't stop an invasion from an organized military.

The people that actually need the guns will still have them (police, swat, military). And we can make a special license for 2 shot rifles for hunting.

The Iraqis are not Americans. We have demonstrated our ability to repel an organized military before...

Not against any kind of modern, organized military. The past trials that our people have faced are meaningless today. Just my two cents.
