Ya bro. I definetely agree. Guns obviously hurt a lot more people in this country than they protect. People need to wake and realize that the more available guns are to individuals, the higher the murder rate will be. Jusy take a look at Europe. It is impossible to get a gun there and the result is a safer and more inhabitable society.

James,

Everbody and their Granny has at least one gun where I live. And our murder rates are relatively low.

Probably comparable to Europe's. And speaking only from my own experience (and yes, I realize the limitations of that) many of the murders in my region that I've been aware of in the past decade or so were NOT commited with guns. One of the worst involved the killer injecting her victim with a lethal mix of methamphetamine and insulin.. and then leaving the victim to die in front of her 3-year-old child.

Guns really don't make a difference one way or another to fucking loonies like that... now, do they?

It's more complex than 'more guns = more murdrers.'

I didn't think FreedomLover would be back after I posted stats with actual links to back them up. It looks like I was right.

There is little doubt that the world in general is more liberal than it was 50 years ago and beyond. Conservatives are simply roadblocks on the path to an ever more progressive and liberal world. What a sad existence.

The only intelligent line ever spoken in a Charles Bronson movie:

"Guns don't scare me. Stupid people with guns scare me."

I will let you wear the chains. I will wear the gun as long
as I have a ccw permit. However, there is one thing that
I believe, and that's a gun don't make a man.

To me gun control opinions is divided like Affirmative
Action, and Race relations. I have never worn chians,
and don't plan to no time soon. You people have guns
& rifles, and this is where I believe I have the rights
to do so..if I choose.

I don't think CCW permits are for everybody. But I DO think putting them in the right hands DOES make a difference.

Helplessness on the part of potential victims encourages violent behaivor in some people. If they start to realize the person their about to attack might have a .45 and know how to use it... well, that can sober them up in a hurry.

I definitely agree with you here, Mouse. I also like your earlier quote from Charles Bronson movies. I truly believe that untrained (therefore stupid) people handling firearms is very much a serious problem. That is why I will agree with any legislation requiring training in the handling and use of a firearm.

Well i am fervently anti-gun. I am certainly a pacifist and fortunately i have never regretted the decision.

I have always been surprised at the apparent lawlessness in the US that requires everybody to own a gun. Could it be that your lawlessness is further aggravated by the proliferation of guns?

The 2nd amendment that you hold so dear was a necessity of the time in which it was created. To own a gun back in the day was as much a necessity as it was a statement of your individual liberty.

But that was the wild west. That was when you hunted for your food, when law-enforcers were few and far between , and justice was what you could win for yourself. But today you have law-enforcement agencies, you have a criminal system and you have your constitutionally assured rights. And you don't need a gun to avail any of them. The ONLY REASON you could possibly need a gun is for personal safety. On the other hand your personal safety is threatened by the amount of guns in the market.. so you go get yourself a bigger gun.. that's when the criminal gets and EVEN BIGGER gun. Dammit you NEED guns because OTHER people have guns.

But if NOBODY had guns you would still be free american citizens with your constitutionaly assured rights, with a system that assists you in claiming these rights.. only you wouldn't be as likely to kill or be killed by a gun.

I think you are selling your society severely short by assuming that those conditions still exist.

The basic argument i hear from gun-supporters is that there are evil people out there who want my stuff and i have the right to defend it. So i have a suggestion. How about legislation that completely bans people from carrying guns around with them. If you need a gun to protect your family, then keep the gun at home and use it when your property is being violated. The advantage of such legislation is that anybody using a gun outside their premises will immediately be censured. The gun then can only be used as a method of self defence, because you are not allowed to take your firearm out and about.

The ABSENCE of lethal weaponry ( which is designed only to KILL - as opposed to cars and power tools) directly affects the number of deaths. No guns means no gun murders.

Now you may claim that the criminals can always get guns. Well yes they can NOW, because getting a gun int he US is easier than getting a driving license. EVERY nation has its rapists, murderers and thieves.. but not every nation has the same number of guns and gun murders that the US does. Ever thought why that is so?

hk,

Much of what you say is true. But if differs from area to area. In my part of the world, guns still very much ARE a a basic tool. We use them to hunt for food. And some people, such as range riders who work alone in remote areas, really do need them for protection against such beasts as grizzly bears.

And carefull with the "designed to kill" argument. A firearm is desinged to launch a projectile at a high velocity and relative accuracy into a target.
Saying all guns are designed for combat (to kill people) is like saying there's no difference between a broadsword and a steak knife. Yes, you CAN kill somebody with a steak knife.. just like you CAN kill somebody with a hunting rifle.
But a hunting rifle ain't a selective-fire infrantry weapon. There IS a difference.

Design has nothing to do with it. It's the intent of the person behind the weapon.

And yes, we have a proffessional police force. And yes, that's really nice. But even the best police force in the world has a response time. And in many cases (such as a 95-pound woman being attacked by a 350-pound would be rapist/murderer) it's all gonna be over long before the police get there.
I'd rather that 95-pound woman at least have the choice to be packing a .357 -- provided she has the proper training.
