About guns...

I'd be interested to see some statistics on how many gun "accidents" involve alcohol - the "good ole boys" sitting around drinking & shooting guns in the air, or the violent husband who comes home drunk.

Would be interesting.

Yeah, but we both know that guns kill people!

So after all guns are banned, what's next? Hunting knives?
Then, after they've banned all huntin knives, what's next? Steak knives?
Then what? Are we going to ban all rope & twine, because you can strangle somebody with it?
I'd certainly say we should ban all rocks too - because you can bash somebody in the head with one!

I know the main topic is an old one, but when we lived out west, on the Fourth of July, on the news, they asked people not to shoot guns into the air because of people getting wounded by bullets from miles away, so I guess it's common for accidents like this to happen. They said Texas had the most instances of these accidents per year.

I don't find that at all hard to believe.

While such statistics might be interesting, they would likely point to the need for education on responsible gun ownership, responsible drinking and owning one's actions.

Yes.

3 very Republican-sounding things.

Assuming a muzzle velocity of 1350 ft/sec, 30 degree firing angle from vertical, and no wind drag, the bullet will travel 9.3 miles before it comes down to the same height it was fired from.

I had a friend whose brother was struck by a stray bullet one day. He was in his own nice quiet neighborhood, and some shooting that was happening a over a mile away (which he had no knowledge of and couldn't even hear it) shot off a bullet that came down to earth (as all things do) in his shoulder.

And on a happier note, it sounds like Alyssa is going to have one heck of a story to tell her kids...
Sounds like she recovered, based on a news article that was released about a year later.

Well, we tried prohibition and that didn't work. Guns are here to stay. So the logical thing to do is educate people on how to use them responsibly. And couple that with expecting people to own their actions and reactions. No more of this, "you made me do it" mentality. If that's Republican-sounding, so be it. It's common sense to me. We each have a plethora of ways to react to something. The hard part for some is to choose the loving action.

Mythbusters did a piece about falling bullets and found it plausible I believe. People have indeed been killed from bullets falling after being shot up into the air.
