If public services are adequately funded and well run by dedicated, motivated professionalsthey can work well.

I notice the right wing talk radio wackos like to compare a proposed national health service to the DMV! Well if you want to pay another couple hundred dollars for your car licence you could have a highly efficient DMV staffed by helpful, well paid people! But we prefer to pay less and get lousy service.

Why don't the anti health service lobby ever criticise the US military?? After all it's a govt run organisation - and one of the largest and most efficient enterprises on the planet.

Because it is adequately funded and well run by dedicated, motivated professionals.

I'm a diehard capitalist and run my own business but I think it's just wrong to let health care be subject to the profit motive.
Then by definition you are not quite such a die hard capitalist.
As the song says, it was a love T.K.O.

Because health care doesn't mimic true market conditions.

Nobody chooses to be ill or contract a disease or get in an accident.

When they do I will gladly support the current system.

I look around and I see that doesn't always work as advertised either.

That's in theory. A theory that seems to always break down over time. Just as the theory about "democracy" being the best form of government.

The DMV is the least of my worries. In fact Ga's DMV isn;t as bad as some other states I've heard about.

Why don't the anti health service lobby ever criticise the US military?? After all it's a govt run organisation - and one of the largest

The military efficient? That's the first I heard about that. There is more waste in the military that you seem to realize.

Because it is adequately funded and well run by dedicated, motivated professionals.

I bet our idea of adequately funded and dedication won't come anywhere near what those people who actually end up doing the work will consider to be so.

And I think there should be option on both sides. If there is to be universal health care, there should still be a private sector for those who still like the current system. I look at it the same as governmental housing. There is no way government accommodations for everyone will compare to my home.

I agree, and there would be waste and abuse in any nationalised health program.

But I think it's pretty impressive that the US military can move 250,000 troops and materiel half way round the world in 90 days!

I agree and that's the way it works in most countries that have nationalised health care.

In the UK I used to have private health insurance, partly subsidised by my employer. It also helps relieve the load on the NHS.

And many doctors work both for the NHS and their own private practice.

I just look at all the other government controlled things and lose faith that the government can efficiently run health care. I'd like a private option. That's all.

The US government already manages Medicare/Medicaid and the VA medical system. It sounds like they have experience needed to run a program for the rest of America as well.
One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you don't do anything at all.

Obviously you have never tried to get service at a VA hospital. I get free care there and I avoid the place like the plague. There's a 2 month wait for dental services. I actually pay for dental care through my wifes job insurance.

Remember the scandal just recently of the VA facilities falling apart? Again, I'm not all about the Feds taking over medical care.

I do not know of the VA system, but I know the government run program where I live is good. Compared to charity care I received in the US, what I have now is outstanding. I do not need to be 99.99% dead to receive care here. You can think of a million excuses why the US cannot do what other countries can do now, but all it takes is to act on a good reason to make it work.
