I don't have any problem with the taxpayers taking care of military vets' healthcare.

But there is a huge hypocrisy when those people denouncing the very principle that supports them.

It's the "I'm all right Jack and f*** you" attitude of the Republicans.

I'm all for personal responsibility and competition but I have major ethical issues with denying health care to people just because they can't afford it.

I don't see the hypocrisy. I followed the rules in place for what I have. I didn't cheat any one and I have done what was asked. If I commit a felony I lose my benefits, or I could not take care of myself and die still. I'm sorry, but IMHO I practiced personal responsibility with my decisions to make sure I was taken care of. And I still do with several retirement accounts and savings to make sure my family is taken care of in my inevitable demise. I can't buy decent life insurance so I have to create my own.

I just don't think that a person who has not contributed anything to anything should have the same health care as someone who pays the even higher taxes that a plan would bring. That's not hypocrisy, that expecting people to be a part of the system if they want the system to help them.

I'm not saying you should feel guilty or that you don't deserve it.

I'm saying that in a wealthy industrialised nation, health care should be available to everyone, not just people who can afford it.

You may not be able to send your son to private school but he still deserves an education.

And yes everyone should contribute, that's how a single payer system works. Even people who have good health. Just as people without children help pay for education and people whose houses never burn down pay for the fire service.

Again, I agree. *shivers* In some areas Gary, you are progressive. I wish you felt the same way about women's issues.

Education helps the community, my health doesn't. Fire protection keep the community from burning to the ground. Firemen do a lot more than just put out house fires. They do general rescue.

Healthcare should be available to everyone who contributes to the system.

And screw the rest of those poor lazy people. Why can't they get a job and pay for their healthcare when they might have a disability or a chronic condition? I guess fx could have been a Spartan in the ancient world. They did not allow anyone to live if they were not physically perfect. You had to be of superior physical strength and constitution to survive there.

You don't think someone's health affects others?

A child who has MRSA plays with your child at daycare. The child's mother can't afford to take him to the doctor, and has to put him in daycare because she has to work, but has no insurance. That doesn't affect you?

Having a healthy society benefits everyone.

I guess you are wrong. If they are an adult when they get sick, they should have paid into the system.

If they are children, they should be covered. You don't understand the way I feel. And until you do, you should refrain from mischaracterizing me.

My idea of a system that would work.

MRSA would be covered in an emergency room. Infectious diseases like that are covered under the current system.
